Inside Odisha’s Dhokra craft: The lost-wax tradition surviving against the odds | News Today News

The petrichor hangs heavy in the air after a fresh round of showers. A dense smoke emerges from a corner of the grounds of the Belgadia Palace in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, as two men squat uncomfortably close to the source – a small pit dug in the ground. One of them holds up a skewer of sorts with a clay-like mass at its end over the flames emanating from the pit. “The temperature is 800 degrees celsius,” says Gopal Sahu, as he swiftly takes the mass in his hand, kneads it in between his palm and fingers before putting it back on the fire. Sahu is a dhokra artist from Kuliana, a village in Mayurbhanj, Odisha’s largest district, which houses over 30 artisan families of the artform. Police said complaints were filed by both sides and an investigation is underway. Police said two men from Baripada area entered the village during a programme at the residence of an Adivasi family. Villagers alleged that the duo harassed two girls attending the event. While one of them managed to flee, villagers caught the other, tied him to a tree with ropes and thrashed him. Police reached the scene, rescued the injured man, and admitted him to the hospital. He was taken to the medical facility after he was unconscious on his return from the door-to-door survey for the census, his nephew Laxmikant Hembram said. Mamata Das, the headmistress of the school, said, “Rajkapur Hembram complained of discomfort after returning from census work. He was admitted to the hospital and died. Normal life was affected in Odisha`s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday, due to opposition BJD`s 12-hour bandh over the death of a school student allegedly due to food poisoning. A girl studying in Class 5 died and more than 100 students fell ill due to alleged food poisoning, after a meal at a government-run residential school in the district, officials said. The Congress also extended support to the bandh that began at 6 am. Vehicular movement was disrupted, as BJD and Congress leaders and supporters blocked roads and burnt tyres in various parts of the district. Most shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in several places in the north Odisha district, though some offices functioned amid tight security. Adequate police personnel have been deployed in the district in view of the bandh, a senior officer said. At least 20 people were injured after a bus in which they were travelling overturned in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday, police said. The bus was on its way from Khiching to Baripada when the mishap occurred on NH 18 near Kuliana chowk, they said. On being informed of the mishap the police rushed to the spot.
