National Anti Doping Act to criminalise trafficking of prohibited substances to athletes

The recently-amended National Anti Doping Act will be modified once again to criminalise trafficking and distribution of prohibited substances to athletes with a jail term of upto five years for suppliers, targeting even medical practitioners if they knowingly prescribe banned drugs. Proposed amendments have been uploaded on the Sports Ministry’s website for feedback from the public with the deadline for submission being June 18. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the amended bill will be tabled during the monsoon session of the Parliament after taking the feedback into consideration. A letter from Gujarat health department calling a a meeting of officials and regulators to discuss “the practice of allopathy by those who have studied Ayurveda” has not gone down well with the Gujarat State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA-GSB), which has stated in a letter that allowing “this dangerous trend” could lead to medical emergencies and “jeopardize the public’s trust in the medical system.” The IMA-GSB members have also taken exception to not being invited to the meeting scheduled for January 3 in Gandhinagar. This comes two days after the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra permitted prescription of Allopathic medicines by Homeopaths who have completed a course in modern pharmacology.
