Always under-appreciated, never overwhelmed, Bhuvneshwar slays the young & fearless

While the 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s fearless hitting has made him this season’s highest run-getter, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, at 36, has exploited that same trait in several new-age batsmen to emerge as one of the league’s top wicket-takers. Though he hasn’t yet got Suryavanshi’s wicket, Bhuvneshwar’s 26 scalps include the who’s who of Gen Next daredevils—Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Sahil Parakh, Sameer Rizvi, Ayush Mhatre, and a few more. The sly old fox has reminded the young turks that their stand-and-deliver, relentless attacking approach, though very popular with fans, isn’t bulletproof. He isn’t allowing the relentlessly attacking kids to run away with his sport. Not that he is getting any credit for keeping bowlers relevant in T20 cricket. But then, that has been Bhuvneshwar’s story all along. As a rookie bowler, he notched Sachin Tendulkar’s first duck in domestic cricket. He had a dream ODI debut against Pakistan, running through their top-order. He is on the Lord’s honours board. He has two Purple Caps and two IPL titles. Still, Bhuvi isn’t even the most talked-about cricketer from …

‘Dushmani jam kar karo lekin…’ : Bashir Badr, poet who modernised the Urdu ghazal, passes away at 91 | Books and Literature News

4 min readUpdated: May 28, 2026 10:42 PM IST In July 1972, when former Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfeqar Ali Bhutto came to India to sign the landmark Simla Agreement on bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, he reached for an Urdu couplet to capture the moment. The couplet, he chose—Dushmani jam kar karo lekin ye gunjaaish rahe, jab kabhi hum dost hojaayein to sharmindah na hon (Perform your duty as the enemy wholeheartedly, but make sure that if we ever become friends, we are not embarrassed)–had been written by the poet Bashir Badr, who passed away at his home in Bhopal on Thursday. He was 91. Born in the winter of 1935 in Ayodhya, which was then part of the United Province in British India, to a civil servant father and “pious” mother, Bashir was a prodigious child. He composed his first couplet when he was just seven, reciting his first ghazal before an audience in 1946 in the city of Etawah, where he was given the title, Badr, meaning the moon, which he chose …

Cricketers change a place’s identity

Cricketers change a place’s identity

This season some insightful cricket-chatter from small-town maidans reached the IPL. It was about Little India’s eternal optimism of seeing the stalwart of the sport in their local stars. Like Malegaon ka Superman, these too were intriguing stories of hope and outlandish ambition. Now running to packed stadiums across India are Samastipur ka Lara, Gopalganj ka Rabada and Meerut ka Suresh Raina. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sakib Hussain and Sameer Rizvi, like so many before them, have temporarily posted their hometowns on cricket’s world map. But to stay there, to make their geography part of cricket history, there are many tight hoops to jump through. So far so good. The left-handed Suryavanshi’s high backlift made Samastipur quickly conclude that they had a mini-Lara amidst them. So overwhelming was the consensus, that the young boy started believing the hype. Watching Lara on loop would become a hobby and later an obsession. So when Sooryavanshi went to Rajasthan Royals trials, he would surprise coach Zubin Bharucha with the choice of his batting idol. Till he actually saw his back-lift …
