Curfew relaxed in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills for five hours on March 12

The total curfew imposed in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district following the death of two persons in violence in adjoining West Garo Hills district two days ago was relaxed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday (March 12, 2026) to allow people to procure essential items, officials said. The curfew had been imposed in East Garo Hills district under Section 163 of the BNSS following apprehensions of disturbance to public peace and tranquility in the wake of the violence in West Garo Hills. East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner R P Marak said the relaxation was allowed to enable residents to procure essential commodities, while security forces continued to maintain vigil in sensitive areas. Violence erupted in West Garo Hills during protests linked to the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), with demonstrators opposing the participation of non-Garo communities in the filing of nominations for the polls. Cave interior(Geological Survey of India- North East Region) (FILE) A metal grill and lock installed by the government to prevent damage to the site in Tolegre village was recently reported to have been broken. A complaint was filed at the Siju police station and the case is being investigated. South Garo Hills superintendent of police (SP) Shailendra Banamiya said the police station received information about the incident on January 28. “Thereafter, the complaint was registered, and a police team was sent to confirm the incident. I myself am at the location right now,” Banamiya said. North Eastern Hill University students are on an indefinite hunger strike Shillong: Tension continues to rise at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong as students have launched an indefinite hunger strike outside the Vice Chancellor’s office, demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The hunger strike, led by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit, accused the Vice Chancellor of “misuse of power” and mismanagement. The students are also calling for the removal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, appointment of a pro-vice chancellor for the Tura campus, and improvements in essential amenities, including revised hostel fees, clean water, Wi-Fi, and ambulance services. Banners with slogans such as “No More Delays, Vice Chancellor Must Go” and “We Demand Fairness, Not Abuse of Power” reflected the students’ growing frustration with the administration. At least 10 people have died in floods and landslides in Meghalaya`s West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts, Following severe downpour since Friday, ANI reported. According to the ANI, seven people were killed in the landslides at Gasuapara area in South Garo Hills district on Saturday, and three people died in floods at Dalu area in West Garo Hills district on Friday, as per CM`s office.
