MHA gives another extension to panel probing Manipur violence | India News

2 min readNew DelhiMay 15, 2026 01:58 AM IST The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a fresh gazette notification giving another extension until November 20, 2026, to a Commission of Inquiry for submitting its report on the probe into the 2023 Manipur violence that claimed over 250 lives. In February, three months before the Commission was due to submit its report, Justice Ajay Lamba, former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and head of the Commission, resigned and the Centre had announced the appointment of former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan as the new chairman. Other members of the Commission are retired IAS officer Himanshu Sekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. According to the MHA notification issued on Thursday, the Commission will now submit its report to the Central government as soon as possible but “not later than November 20, 2026”. Manipur violence: SC asks CBI, SIT to share chargesheet copies with victims, kin | Legal News

3 min readNew DelhiFeb 27, 2026 02:15 AM IST The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the CBI and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the ethnic violence that rocked Manipur in 2023 to share the copies of the chargesheets filed in the cases with the victims and kin. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi issued the direction after perusing the status report filed by former Maharashtra DGP Dattatray Padsalgikar, who is monitoring the investigations. The SC had appointed Padsalgikar on August 11, 2023, to supervise the probe by the CBI and state police in Manipur, and asked him to also “investigate the allegations that certain police officers colluded with perpetrators of violence (including sexual violence) during the conflict”. Hearing the Manipur violence-related matters on February 13, the SC had sought a fresh report on the status of the investigation. Manipur: Kuki groups warn Meiteis against climbing ‘sacred’ hill

Kuki-Zo civil society organisations have “warned” the Meitei community against climbing the Thangjing Hill in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, stating that any attempts “will be opposed tooth and nail”. The Thangjing Hill is considered a sacred site for Meiteis who visit it in April. In a statement, six Kuki-Zo groups said any attempt to climb the hills would be viewed as a “direct challenge”. “There is speculation that the Meitei community intends to cross the buffer zone for Chinga Kaba at Thangting Hill in the month of April. No political settlement has been reached between the Government of India and the Kuki-Zo community, and without such an agreement, the Meitei community has no jurisdiction to enter Kuki-Zo land,” it said. “Whoever attempts to cross the buffer zone shall be considered a direct challenge to the Kuki-Zo community, and any untoward incidents that occur during such attempts shall be solely the responsibility of those who undertake them,” it added. Guwahati: Days after President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur, protests could be seen at different parts of Valley areas. While the Kuki-dominated hill districts welcomed the Central government’s decision, the civil society organisations based in Meitei-dominated valley districts have been demanding the revocation of the decision. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity demanded the revocation of President’s Rule and asked the Central Government to reinstate the popular government.  Ten MLAs from the Kuki community, however, have welcomed the decision. Different women’s groups from Imphal East gathered at Thumbutgong Brahmapur areas today and shouted slogans, demanding a popular government in the state as soon as possible. Chingkheinganba Singh, in a tiny pink t-shirt, had turned his head to look at something or someone. His mother and eight-month-old sibling sat a step across from him. An orange rattle toy lay on a nest of dry bamboo leaves on the ground. The three-year-old boy from the Meitei community has a bullet wound in the skull, the autopsy report said. There are stab wounds and fractures in the chest and lacerations in the forearm and other parts of the body. His right eye is missing. Members of various communities call for release of six kidnapped civilians in Manipur New Delhi: The women’s wing of the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) on Thursday appealed for the safe and immediate release of six people – three women and three children including an infant – kidnapped by suspected Kuki insurgents from Manipur’s Jiribam district. The women leaders of the valley-dominant Meitei community in a statement demanded immediate and serious intervention from the highest levels of the government to ensure safe release of the kidnapped civilians. They said if the women and children are harmed, the authorities will have to take responsibility. Not taking visible action to ensure the safe release of the six hostages may deepen public mistrust and fuel perception that the government is “complicit in perpetuating violence for political ends, including the potential division of Manipur along ethnic lines”, the DMCC said. During the wee hours of the day, the militants attacked a village in Jiribam district, an official said. The militants used sophisticated weapons and opened fire, targeting the village in the vicinity of the Borobekra police station around 5 am, he said. Furthermore, he added that they also charged bombs. The official said that the CRPF and police personnel retaliated to the attack and a heavy exchange of fire started. He also stated that the additional security forces were being rushed to the spot as reinforcement. So far no casualties have been reported in the gunfight.  The violence broke out while the elderly people, women and children were being moved to safer places by security forces. The area, Borobekra, is located around 30 km from Jiribam town. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected the preliminary objection raised by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) regarding the maintainability of the petition filed by three cadres of the United National Liberation Front (P) challenging their arrest and remand orders for waging war against the state in the backdrop of Manipur’s ethnic violence. The high court also held that in matters concerning personal liberty, it is “never just or proper to reject a plea based on a pedantic, hyper-technical” approach. Based on a July 19, 2023, FIR, NIA arrested the self-styled army chief of the organisation Thokchom Shyamjai Singh, its intelligence officer Laimayum Anand Sharma, and a driver Salam Ibomcha Meitei on March 13. The three are facing charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy and waging war against the state, as well as for offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
