The Four Eyes that keep Satwik & Chirag on the right track

The day Satwik-Chirag defeated World No 1s Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho on way to the Singapore Open Super 750 title, silent preparations were ongoing in Hyderabad and Mumbai, and wherever Mathias Boe was hunched over his laptop. The backroom analysis focused on how to prepare for the same Koreans the next time. Defeated in straight games, Seo-Kim are expected to hit the drawing board with Korean doubles great and legendary coach Park Joo-bong, and ensure Seo would figure ways to foil the strategy of being pushed to the back-court by the Indians. Team Satwik-Chirag was readying to counter these counter-strikes. ‘Four eyes see better than two,’ went Matthias Boe’s announcement on Instagram of “secret” intelligence-sharing that has admittedly happened behind the scenes. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty and their Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her have all been in cahoots with Boe for a month now, plotting against the best names in men’s doubles from Korea, Indonesia, China, Taiwan and Malaysia. Two Indian men’s doubles pairs make semifinal cut

The unseeded Indian pairing of Siddhant Banthia and Parikshit Somani dismantled Nicolas Mejia and Bernard Tomic 7-5, 6-0 to reach the DafaNews Bengaluru Open doubles semifinals on Thursday. The home duo will now fight it out with Australia’s Blake Bayldon and Mattew Christopher Romios for a place in the title clash. An even first set on Court 1 of the KSLTA Tennis Stadium saw both Banthia/Somani and Mejia/Tomic go toe-to-toe for the upper hand, which the latter nearly seized in game seven. However, after saving a crucial break point, the Indian pair swept through games nine and 11 on their serve, before breaking in game 12 for the lead. Carrying the momentum with them into the second set, Banthia and Somani then bageled their opponents in the second set that lasted just 20 minutes. Earlier, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni took a step closer to a successful title defence with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hynek Barton and Eric Vanshelboim. The reigning champions broke early in the first set before smoothly sailing into a lead. …

Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios’ doubles journey ends at Brisbane International

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic were eliminated from the Brisbane International after losing their match against top seeds Michael Venus and Nikola Mektic in the second round of the men’s doubles. Following their thrilling triumph in Monday’s opening round, the pair lost by a slim margin. Before Djokovic’s catastrophic double fault allowed Metkic and Venus to win the match tie-breaker, the team was within two points of victory. Mektic and Venus advanced to the quarterfinals when Djokovic and Kyrgios lost the match 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. “Down three points in the match tie-break it wasn’t looking great, but somehow we got back in there and Mekta hit a great return on match point,” Venus said. After losing to Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a battle of big servers in men’s singles on Tuesday, Kyrgios, who is participating in his first event after having wrist surgery in September 2023, acknowledged he was still experiencing wrist issues. However, in the Brisbane International on Wednesday, local favourite Kimberly Birrell shocked women’s second seed Emma Navarro, while Grigor Dimitrov remained …
