‘Still in the dark’: Confusion shrouds TMC rebels’ merger with NCPI

Confusion shrouded the proposed merger between rebel Trinamool Congress MPs and the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), with some leaders of the little-known party saying on Tuesday that they were yet to receive any communication from the lawmakers, even as the dissidents named a new president of the Howrah-based outfit. Rebel TMC MPs with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at his residence, in New Delhi (ANI) TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who is leading the rebel faction, told the media that Jyotiprakash Chatterjee is the new president of NCPI. Speaking to HT, however, NCPI leaders said that they were still in the dark about the merger negotiations and Chatterjee being appointed the new president. “Let us first settle down with the bloc that we are trying to merge with another party. Acceptance has already come to us. They are happy to take us. We will work together with the NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. Speaker Om Birla to hear out TMC brass first on 20 rebel MPs’ merger with NCPI

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will hear out the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership first before deciding on the request received from the 20 TMC rebel MPs to merge with the Nationalist Citizenship Party of India (NCPI), people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee along with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at a press conference (Hindustan Times File/Samir Jana) The decision follows a communication from TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee that asked the speaker to reject the merger request, since the TMC was “a single, indivisible political party” and there was no option of a split under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. Birla’s office had issued a letter to Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC floor leader in the Lok Sabha, for a meeting on Monday, but it could not take place because Abhishek was being grilled by investigative agencies at the time. “Speaker Om Birla will take a call on the issue of the merger of 20 TMC MPs with NCPI only after hearing both sides. The Speaker’s office …

NCPI merger, NDA’s number game; another egg attack: TMC troubles see no end | The latest

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) identity crisis took a surprise turn on Sunday when 20 rebel MPs, led by Kakoli Ghosh, told speaker Om Birla that they have merged with a little-known Tripura-based party, strengthening the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and setting the stage for one of the biggest defections in India’s parliamentary history. A local youth (unseen) throws an egg on TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh who was leaving from the residence of party chairperson Mamata Banerjee, in Kolkata on Monday. (ANI video grab) At least 20 lawmakers of the TMC met Birla on Sunday and submitted a letter that said the rebel group had merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India or NCPI, which was formed in 2022 and fought its last election in 2023. The party currently doesn’t have a lawmaker anywhere in the country. According to a Lok Sabha functionary, Birla will now verify the signatures of 20 MPs before approving the merger. “We, 20 MPs, have now merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party and will work with the NDA under the …

Merger with NCPI may allow Trinamool rebels to vote in Lok Sabha prior to any ruling on disqualification

With sources in the government indicating that the Centre is likely to bring the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty First Amendment) Bill, 2026 or the Delimitation Bill as early as the monsoon session of Parliament, which is likely to begin in mid-July, it becomes crucial that this bloc, which has promised support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) gets to vote when the said Bills are taken up. In April, the government had …

Congress-NCP (SP) merger buzz intensifies

MUMBAI: Amid speculation over a merger between the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC), talk of a merger between the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) and the Congress has gained traction. Congress-NCP (SP) merger buzz intensifies Congress insiders claimed the party had received feelers from the NCP (SP) leadership but no formal discussions had taken place. While NCP (SP) national working president Supriya Sule and state unit chief Shashikant Shinde dismissed reports of any such proposal, former Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole suggested that efforts were underway to prevent a division of secular votes. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, however, described the Congress as a “sinking ship”, saying seasoned regional leaders would have little incentive to associate with it. A merger of any regional party with the Congress would, in fact, create greater political space for the BJP, he said. Talk of a merger come amid reports that five to six NCP (SP) MPs are warming up to the BJP, raising concerns about possible defections. On Thursday, three NCP (SP) MLAs — Uttam Jankar, Abhijeet Patil and Narayan …

TMC-Congress merger buzz, heavy-weight rebel camp: What’s happening in Mamata Banerjee’s TMC

The Trinamool Congress, founded by former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, seems to be all over the place with MPs and MLAs forming rebel camps, mayors stepping down and now seemingly divided stands over speculation of merger with the Congress. Amid buzz of a TMC-Congress merger, names of rebel MPs have emerged, with the list including top leaders like Saayoni Ghosh and June Maliah. (PTI file photos) Adding to back-to-back setbacks, Mamata Banerjee lost another Rajya Sabha MP — Sushmita Dev — on Wednesday after she announced her resignation from the membership of the Upper House and the TMC. Dev’s exit came two days after another TMC leader — Sukhendu Sekhar Ray — resigned from the Rajya Sabha, alleging “unbridled corruption” and “anarchical rule” of the party. The resignations of Dev and Ray come as the latest blow after an unsteady week for Mamata Banerjee, with TMC suffering a split in Bengal assembly – with 58 lawmakers backing rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee, who staked claim to the Leader of the Opposition position – and …

Activists and residents from several villages staged a protest in front of the Block Education Officer’s office in Arsikere on Monday, under the banner of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO). The Department of School Education has drawn up a list of schools in the taluk earmarked for merger with the nearest Karnataka Public Schools under the scheme. The AIDSO State treasurer Subhash Bettadakoppa criticised the move, pointing out that schools proposed for merger included those with healthy enrolment figures. “The schools at Bandur and Kenkere have a strength of 162 and 120 respectively. There is no logic in merging schools with such numbers. Once the policy is implemented, children will be forced to travel up to five km to reach their new school,” he said. He further alleged that the …
