The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) on Friday released draft rules to bring television channels, radio stations, DTH operators and other broadcasting services under a single regulatory framework. According to the ministry, the proposed rules consolidate six existing policy frameworks covering television channels, DTH services, Headend-in-the-Sky (HITS) operators, private FM radio, community radio and IPTV services into a single set of regulations. The draft has been placed in the public domain for consultation, and comments can be submitted till July 27. H Vinoth’s Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan, touted as the Tamil star’s last film before he enters politics, has been stuck with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Amid this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) informed the Lok Sabha that the average time for a film to be certified has dropped to 18 days. The MIB also released data about the number of films challenged before the revising committee (RC) or the High Court (HC). Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan was supposed to be released in theatres on January 9 but is yet to be censored by the CBFC. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a new order to OTT platforms operating in India. Amid rising political tensions with Pakistan, the government has told all streamers to stop broadcasting Pakistani content. A still from Zindagi Gulzar Hai, a popular Pakistani series that was watched in India as well. “In the interest of national security, all OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries operating in India are advised to discontinue the web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content, whether made available on a subscription based model or otherwise, having its origins in Pakistan with immediate effect,” read a notice, shared by news agency ANI. The ministry of information and broadcasting issued an advisory directing streaming platforms to ensure that they do not transmit illegal content, and that their content is classified according to age. MIB issues advisory for OTT platforms The advisory, issued on Tuesday, follows references from parliamentarians, regulators and public grievances, and the immense blowback to comments made by podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia on a YouTube comedy show. The advisory also addressed self-regulatory bodies (SRB) of streaming platforms such as Netflix, JioHotstar and Amazon Prime Video. The advisory directed the streamers and their SRBs to take measures under part three of Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. On Monday night, the ministry of information and broadcasting ordered Delhi-based news magazine, The Caravan, to take down a story detailing allegations of civilian abuse, torture and murder by the Indian army in Jammu under Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation (IBDF), an industry body of TV broadcasters whose members include Star, Viacom 18, Times Television Network amongst others, wants online streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to be removed from the scope of regulation of the contentious Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023 which was introduced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) in November 2023.
