Panaji, The Indian Coast Guard has busted an international oil cargo smuggling syndicate in a mid-sea operation, intercepting three vessels involved in the illicit trade in international waters, the maritime security agency said on Saturday. The syndicate had devised a sophisticated modus operandi to smuggle large quantities of low-cost oil and oil-based cargo sourced from conflict-ridden regions, according to a Coast Guard release. The cargo was transferred mid-sea to motor tankers in international waters, allowing the operators to evade customs duties owed to coastal states, including India. The racket was allegedly run through a network of handlers operating from multiple countries, coordinating the sale and transfer of oil cargo between seagoing vessels. (File) In a massive drugs bust, an Iranian boat carrying over 500 kg of narcotics has been caught off Gujarat’s Porbandar after an overnight mid-sea operation. Those on board the vessel have been detained and are being questioned to find out the source of the drugs and where such a big consignment was headed, officials said. A joint operation in the sea of Porbandar by the officials from the Gujarat Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and the federal anti-drugs agency Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) led to the seizure. The boat came under the radar near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) – which separates the international waters, after which it was brought to Porbandar. Further searches are on for suspected vessels and more inbound consignments of drugs as officials keep an eye on the sea routes for smuggling of narcotics. Coast Guard airlifts Sri Lankan national in distress from mid-sea to Chennai

A Sri Lankan national, who developed a critical heart condition while fishing mid-sea on board a fishing vessel off Chennai coast, was rescued and airlifted to Chennai in a helicopter by the Indian Coast Guard. According to an official spokesperson, the Coast Guard evacuated him from the fishing vessel about 100 nautical miles off Chennai. The boat went “adrift at sea due to engine failure” on 28 March. The Coast Guard is coordinating with authorities in Colombo for an early return of the boat. “The patient was evacuated by ICGS Rani Abakka at sea and, subsequently, airlifted by ICG ALH Mk-III helicopter deployed from the the ICG air station at Chennai. He was handed over to officials from the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission for further treatment,” the official said. Source link
