Delhi`s Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced a fee hike for the academic year 2025-26, with increases ranging from 16 to 41 per cent across various courses. A comparison of the latest prospectus with that of the previous year reveals a sharp rise in tuition fees. The Department of Persian of Jamia Millia Islamia has seen a 41.41 per cent increase, with fees rising from Rs 6,700 to Rs 9,475 per year. The Department of Arabic follows closely, with a 37.15 per cent hike, pushing annual fees from Rs 7,200 to Rs 9,875. Similarly, foreign language programmes, including BA (Hons) in Turkish and other languages, have also witnessed a 37.15 per cent fee rise. Social sciences programmes, including MA and BA (Hons) in Political Science, four-year BA (Multidisciplinary), and B Com (Hons), now cost Rs 9,875 per year, reflecting a 32.99 per cent increase from the previous Rs 7,425. Admissions for the language course are open throughout the year. The admission forms and detailed prospectus about the course can be obtained from the office of the Hony. Students who are interested in the Jamia’s Urdu language course have to send a self-addressed 24×12 cm envelope duly stamped with Rs 10 postage stamp at the above-mentioned address. President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Mazhar Asif as the vice chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia, according to Union Ministry of Education officials. Asif is currently a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University‘s (JNU) School of Languages. “The president, in her capacity as the visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has appointed Professor Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, as the vice chancellor of Jamia for five years from the date on which he enters upon his office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,” a ministry official said. Asif, a JNU alumnus, was a member of the drafting committee for the new National Education Policy, 2020. The Jamia vice chancellor post fell vacant in November 2023 when previous VC Najma Akhtar’s tenure came to an end. Asif has served as a member of the Executive Councils of both the JNU and the Maulana Abulkalam Azad National Urdu University. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the visitor of JMI, has approved amendments to the existing statute 20, an official notification stated. This approval was conveyed to Jamia Millia Islamia by the ministry of education (department of higher education) vide its letter no. 6-11/2022-CU 2 dated March 6, 2024. The three new departments are department of law under the faculty of law, the department of dental sciences, department of medical sciences under the faculty of dentistry. Meanwhile, the varsity also launched several innovative self-financed programmes in BTech and MTech in the beginning of this month. Among the new courses are BTech in Electrical & Computer Engineering, BTech in Electronics (VLSI design and Technology), BTech in Computer Science & Engineering (Data Sciences), and MTech in Data Sciences. In response to a video surfacing online depicting students chanting slogans such as “Strike for Babri,” the Jamia Millia Islamia university in Delhi witnessed a precautionary deployment of police personnel on Monday. The security measure coincided with the Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya. The idol was erected at the historic site of the 16th Century Babri Masjid, demolished in 1992.
