The order was issued on Monday (November 18, 2024), and it now stands cancelled. In its office memorandum dated November 18, the Ministry had asked all its Accounts Officers to “clear the salary bills of only those officials who have been certified regarding their training of mandatory iGOT courses”. “In other cases, where certificates are not provided, salary bills may be kept on hold till further orders,” it stated. New Delhi: The government on Monday termed the television news coverage of cricketer Rishabh Pant’s road accident and some other crime stories “distasteful” and “heart-wrenching”, and asked channels to strictly follow the programme code laid down under the relevant law. The government on Wednesday asked YouTube to take down three channels for making false and sensational claims about various public welfare initiatives and spreading fake news. The three channels were declared as peddlers of fake news by the Press Information Bureau Fact Check Unit on Tuesday. “The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has directed YouTube to take down the three channels Aaj Tak Live, News Headlines and Sarkari Updates,” an official source said Wednesday. Aaj Tak Live is not associated with the India Today Group, the government had clarified. The channels were using thumbnails and images of TV news channels and their anchors to mislead viewers into believing that the news shared by them was authentic, an official statement said on Tuesday. “These channels were also found to be displaying advertisements on their videos, and monetising misinformation on YouTube,” it had said. Google’s Jigsaw subsidiary is launching a new anti-misinformation project in India, aimed at preventing misleading information that has been blamed for inciting violence, a top executive said. The initiative will use “prebunking” videos – designed to counter false claims before they become widespread – circulated on the company’s YouTube platform and other social media sites. Google’s efforts to challenge the spread of misinformation mark a contrast with rival Twitter which is cutting its trust and safety teams, despite new owner Elon Musk saying it will not become a “free-for-all hellscape”. Google recently conducted an experiment in Europe where it sought to counter anti-refugee narratives online in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
