Environment ministry’s expert panel clears Varanasi to Kolkata expressway

New Delhi, An expert panel of the environment ministry has recommended the grant of environment clearance to a 235-km greenfield expressway connecting Varanasi and Kolkata, which requires the diversion of more than 103 hectares of reserved and protected forest land in West Bengal. Environment ministry’s expert panel clears Varanasi to Kolkata expressway A part of the proposed National Highways Authority of India project, which involves the construction of a four-to-six lane expressway and costs ₹9,250 crore, will also pass through a tiger landscape. The details of the project were discussed at the 444th meeting of the expert panel, known as the expert appraisal committee , which took place between April 23 and April 24. The project will run through the districts of Purulia, Bankura, Pashchim Mednipur, Hoogli and Howrah, and will require cutting of 40,000 trees in non-forest areas and 10,000 in forest areas, according to the minutes of the meeting. Vinesh Phogat Opposes Sports Ministry’s Decision To Restore Wrestling Federation of India Affiliation

Olympian wrestler and Congress MLA from Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, on Wednesday opposed the decision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to lift the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), restore its affiliation and hand over the reins to the current set of office-bearers. The Sports Ministry suspended the Sanjay Singh-led federation three days after the elections over the announcement to hold U15 and U20 nationals and has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to establish a temporary panel to oversee the operations of the WFI. On Monday, it decided to lift the suspension following an order by the Delhi High Court. However, Vinesh said the media should raise the issue of federations being handed over to goons and criminals. “I want the media to raise this issue more strongly. This is completely wrong. While clarifying that the selection would be the sole responsibility of the National Sports Federations, the government has sought the process to be done in a transparent manner with the policy/criteria formulated in advance. The selection norms have to be put up on the website of the National sports federations and any amendment should be made three months before the selection. The government has also sought video recording of the selection process apart from the minutes of the selection committee. An efficient dispute resolution mechanism is expected to be created by every federation, to address the grievances of athletes about their non-selection within a week. Quite significantly, the government observer or SAI nominee, will not be part of the selection committee, and would only observe the selection …

CESC gets ‘A’ rating in Power Ministry’s annual assessment

Considering its overall performance, the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), Mysuru, has bagged an ‘A’ grade in the rankings announced by the Ministry of Power, after a comprehensive evaluation of the country’s ESCOMs. The CESC’s ranking, when compared to last year’s assessment, has improved, with the corporation’s position going up to an ‘A’ grade from a ‘B’ grade, taking up several measures aiming at improving its performance, service, and also other key areas, including minimising distribution losses and so on, according to the CESC officials. Announcing the CESC’s national ranking among ESCOMs at a press conference here on Thursday, CESC Chairman and MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda and CESC Managing Director Sheela attributed the improvement of CESC’s rating in the national assessment due to efficiency, overall performance, and measures taken to cut down distribution losses which is less than 10%.
