The Delhi High Court has permitted a 15-year-old rape survivor to medically terminate her 28-week pregnancy, observing that although the law does not provide for abortion after 24 weeks, such permission can be accorded in view of grave mental injury and trauma inflicted upon the mind of a minor girl. A vacation Bench of Justice Mini Pushkarna, however, clarified that if the child is born alive in this case, authorities must offer medical assistance to the baby, involve the Child Welfare Committee, and if so wished by the girl and her father, give the baby up for adoption. A football coach from Maharashtra’s Palghar district was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and blackmailing a minor for over three years. Abhijit Mendal, the accused, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused has been arrested and reportedly assaulted the 17-year-old under the pretext of mentoring her. According to police, Mendal repeatedly raped the victim, who had joined his football training academy in Vasai in 2023 and even made objectionable videos of her and later used them to blackmail her when she began to distance herself. He is also accused of recording videos and photographs of the assaults. The victim mustered courage and finally approached the police with her family and filed a complaint against the coach, which led to Mandal’s arrest. In a gruesome incident, a 49-year-old man allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old girl before pushing her from the roof of a residential apartment in Khammam three days ago, leaving her seriously injured with fractured ribs. The shocking incident came to light after the grievously injured girl regained consciousness at a city-based hospital where she is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to sources, the traumatised girl reportedly narrated the horrific incident to her parents late on Monday night following which the latter lodged a complaint against the accused identified as Mohammed Ghouse, a truck driver. Sources said that Ghouse allegedly targeted the minor girl who had been staying with her family members at the apartment complex, where her grandfather is working as a watchman, for the past few days. The Odisha police have arrested a man from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with the trafficking and forcible marriage of a minor tribal girl. Authorities said that the investigation will be expanded to bring more individuals involved under its scope. The girl, lured with the promise of a job, was trafficked from Kankadahad area in Dhenkanal district to Jhansi by a middleman. In her complaint to Kamakshyanagar police station, she alleged that she was sold to two families in Jhansi and subjected to sexual assault by multiple men over a period of nearly two years. Police confirmed that Binay Patra, accused of sending the girl to Jhansi, had already been arrested earlier. A special court in Pune on Thursday framed charges against the 65-year-old accused in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a minor girl at Nasrapur in Pune district, marking the commencement of the trial that will be conducted daily. As reported by PTI, Special Judge S R Salunkhe ordered the proceedings to be held “in-camera” (behind closed doors) starting Friday, observing that there is strong prima facie evidence and a chargesheet against the accused Bhimrao Kamble. The Gauhati High Court has recently acquitted two men accused of sexual assault and held that the survivor had not specified what she meant by ‘bad deeds’ done to her and “unless the word ‘bad act’ is clarified, the word can have a host of meanings”. A bench of justices Michael Zothankhuma and Sanjeev Kumar Sharma was hearing the plea of the accused that “the evidence of the victim was not reliable” as there was contradiction in the same. The court held in agreement that evidence of the survivor was insufficient and the same needs more support. The judgement dated May 26 read that “unless there is clarification of the word ‘bad act’, the exact deed done to the victim is left open-ended and is not decisive of which illegal act has been inflicted upon the victim.” The bench held that the prosecution had not been able to prove the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. ‘Bad deeds’ The court noted that the survivor had not explained as to what she meant when she …

A nine-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by two minor boys from her village in the Haldi area of Ballia district, police said on Tuesday. An FIR was lodged based on a complaint filed by the girl`s father, a resident of a village under Haldi police station limits, they said. According to the complaint, the accused allegedly lured the girl with a bribe and sexually assaulted her on the evening of May 23 while she was grazing goats outside the village. The complaint also alleged that the accused used casteist slurs during the incident. Bairia Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Fahim Qureshi said that the two accused boys are 11 to 12 years old and were known to the girl.
