Women on dharna outside Assembly over non payment of salary, BJD raises issue in House | India News

As hundreds of women working as support staff under the Mission Shakti department staged a demonstration outside the Assembly over different issues, the opposition BJD on Monday demanded immediate release of their salaries. While the agitating women were shouting slogans at the Mahatma Gandhi Road leading to the Assembly, the issue was raised in the House during Zero Hour by Opposition chief whip Pramila Mallik. She criticised the state’s BJP government for stopping the salary of about 60,000 women working as supporting staff to different women self-help groups across the state. Stating that these supporting staff were recruited by the previous BJD government to help the SHGs, Mallik said: “The BJP government stopped their salary after assuming office. There is fear among the women that their jobs will be terminated.” She said that former chief minister Naveen Patnaik had empowered 70 lakh women in the state by bringing them under the umbrella of Mission Shakti. Naveen Patnaik govt. announces cash incentive for 70 lakh SHG members

File. | Photo Credit: ANI With the model code of conduct expected to be in force anytime due to the upcoming polls, the Naveen Patnaik government in Odisha has stepped up earmarking cash incentives across different sectors. Approximately 70 lakh self-help group members, regarded a significant support base for the ruling Biju Janata Dal, will receive financial aid of ₹1,000 each for uniforms and blazers. The State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, also approved ₹2,000 each for 1.5 lakh SHG members occupying leadership positions. The State government will have to cough up ₹730 crore towards this.
