Polanco hit .265 with 26 home runs and 78 RBIs this year for the Seattle Mariners. It was the 32-year-old’s second season with Seattle after a decade with the Minnesota Twins. Polanco’s arrival comes after the departures of outfielder Brandon Nimmo, closer Edwin Díaz and first baseman Pete Alonso left New York without three of its fan favorites. Polanco’s deal is worth a reported $40 million. Last year, Polanco was mostly a designated hitter and also played second base, but New York’s biggest current need in the infield may be at first after Alonso’s exit. The Mets acquired second baseman Marcus Semien in a trade for Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor is a fixture at shortstop. Polanco was an All-Star in 2019 for Minnesota, and he hit a career-high 33 home runs in 2021. He had surgery in October 2024 to repair his left patellar tendon, and …

Netflix signs a three year deal to stream MLB live events and games

Netflix will stream a single game on Opening Night of each season, the Home Run Derby, and one “special event game” each year. In 2026, that will cover the “Field of Dreams” game broadcast from Dyersville, Iowa, on August 13th, 2026, between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. The games signed up by all three networks cover a media deal that MLB previously had with ESPN alone, and on NBC’s end, gives it the Sunday Night Baseball game, as well as draft coverage and other games for its networks. According to the league, “Some Sunday night games will stream on Peacock and simulcast on NBCSN during weeks there is overlap with previously negotiated media rights deals on NBC,” while Peacock will also carry MLB’s Sunday Leadoff games that start around noon and simulcast on the newly relaunched NBC Sports Network. And for ESPN, it has a 30-game broadcast package each season that will be exclusive to its channels and the ESPN app, 150 out-of-market games streaming (one per day) in the ESPN app, and the …

11 year-old boy hits jackpot with rare Baseball player card of Paul Skenes | Sport-others News

An 11-year-old’s birthday present from his parents is about to fetch him money beyond his dreams. When the boy received a hobby box of 2024 Topps Chrome Update for Christmas, he found a redemption card in the box. Though his father mistook it as a checklist, the boy knew better and after he sent it back to Topps, they received the highly-prized one-of-one autographed Paul Skenes MLB debut patch card. Such has been the craze around Skenes, the American baseball pitcher of the Pittsburgh Pirates this year, that the 11 year old might end up making more money than Skenes MLB salary if the auction goes as expected. As of Wednesday night, there have been 56 bids, with the highest bid reportedly as high as 550000 USD. The family had turned over the card to the auction house Fanatics Collect, and there is still a week left before the bids end on March 20. For the record, the All-Star pitcher Skenes is set to make a base salary of $800,000 this season. Some publications like …

Baseball to have robot umpires from 2026? | Sports News

Baseball to have robot umpires from 2026? | Sports News

An automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system will be trialed at 13 ballparks hosting 19 Major League Baseball teams in 2025, reported CNN. It means robot umpires will be part of a challenge system during Spring training next year, with an eye on implementing the system in the 2026 regular season. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told CNN, “I think we will have a Spring training ABS test that will provide a meaningful opportunity for all Major League players to see what the challenge system will look like.” Players’ experience with it will go a long way in deciding when it will be implemented, Manfred was quoted as saying by CNN. While human umpires will still call balls and strikes, teams that now have a limited number of challenges with which they can appeal on-field decisions, will be able to summon the robot umpires. The ABS technology uses Hawk-Eye cameras to track the location of each pitch in relation to the strike zone, CNN stated. Manfred said it was a crucial time as the human umpires’ collective …

Who is Shohei Ohtani? Samurai with Hello Kitty cuteness in baseball

Months before a 60-year-old woman with Indian roots might become the US president, a 30-year-old Japanese man is redefining baseball, the ultimate American pastime. The age of Asia, it seems, is upon America with the land of the rising sun announcing dawn. And they thought it was China they needed to worry about. The Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris might have nosed ahead of her Republican rival Donald Trump on the popularity charts but she is nowhere near the cult following of Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star who has hit the Major League Baseball, and all 50 American states, like a giant spiraling storm. This isn’t just a baseball story, it’s much more. It’s about soft-power superseding real power, the blurring of international borders and excellence leading to acceptability. It’s also about multicultural America delivering on its promise of equality and making even unrealistic dreams come true. Born to a national level badminton playing mother and an amateur baseball playing father, the Japanese had pedigree. But Ohtani isn’t some ‘find of the …

Hulu with Live TV adds MLB Network just as baseball season gets underway

Hulu’s subscription TV service has added MLB Network to its core channel lineup in the nick of time for the league’s Opening Day 2024. This will provide customers with access to “over 100 MLB games nationally broadcast over the course of the season,” along with the network’s original programming and studio shows. YouTube TV, one of Hulu with Live TV’s primary competitors, abruptly dropped MLB Network early last year after it was unable to reach a new carriage agreement with Major League Baseball. And with no announcement of a return ahead of today’s opening games, it appears that YTTV subscribers will go without it for another year. Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising after the company shelled out $2 billion for the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket; something had to be sacrificed for that deal, and football brings in far more viewers than baseball nowadays. But MLB Network continues to be offered by the majority of YouTube’s competitors, including the aforementioned Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV, and Fubo. The latter service also just added the …
