3 min readMumbaiMar 18, 2026 01:55 AM IST A day after it was passed by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Council on Tuesday cleared the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, amid fears expressed by opposition as well as ruling party legislators on misuse of provisions of the Bill by authorities as well as self-proclaimed protectors of religion. The government has said the Bill seeks to prohibit unlawful religious conversions carried out through force, coercion, allurement, misrepresentation or other fraudulent means. The Bill was opposed by the Congress and NCP (SP) from the opposition benches while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) supported it. Replying to the discussion on the Bill, Minister of State for Home Pankaj Bhoyar said the Bill does not intend to snatch a person’s right to convert or curtail a woman’s freedom but only to curb forceful conversions. “The Bill is not targeting a particular religion. The facilities for members of the Bihar Legislature, both MLAs and MLCs, have been expanded.   From now on, legislators will receive a monthly telephone allowance of Rs 8,300, and they will no longer be required to submit vouchers or bills for reimbursement. State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary on Thursday presented a copy of the Bihar Legislature Members` Salary, Allowances and Pension (Amendment) Rules, 2025 in the House, formally introducing the new system. Under this rule, legislators may use any number of phone connections, whether one or ten, with all expenses covered under the fixed monthly amount. This move is being viewed as part of the government`s effort to modernise legislative functioning. Pune: Maharashtra BJP MLC Yogesh Tilekar’s uncle was allegedly abducted and killed by unidentified persons in Pune district on Monday, a police official said. The victim, Satish Wagh (55), was bundled into an SUV near Shewalwadi Chowk in Hadapsar area of Pune city by four to five persons when he was out on a morning walk, prompting police to form several teams to trace him. Wagh was found murdered near Yavat on Pune-Solapur Highway in Pune district, around 40 kilometres from the spot he was abducted, said Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil. “There were multiple injuries on his body. Several teams have fanned out to nab the accused. A team is at the spot to conduct panchnama,” Patil informed. Earlier in the day, a police official said Tilekar’s family didn’t receive any call for ransom nor had they raised suspicion on anyone. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Friday held a meeting with Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy and demanded the disqualification of two members, MLC Patnam Mahender Reddy and MLC Kusukuntla Damodar Reddy after they resigned from the BRS and later joined Congress. BRS MLCs MS Prabhakar Rao, Yadava Reddy, Seri Subhash Reddy, and other leaders were part of the delegation. The delegation said that the actions of these members, joining the ruling Congress, warrant disciplinary measures under the anti-defection laws. “They joined the ruling Congress which attracts action under the anti-defection law,” Seri Subhash Reddy said. Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan, Joint Editor of Siasat Urdu newspaper, as Members of Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor’s quota.
