Acting on directions from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court, the transport department has launched a crackdown in the state capital against vehicles fitted with modified silencers, hooters and multi-toned horns. Thirty-three vehicles were challaned and nine seized in just two days of enforcement. The drive being carried out jointly by the transport department and traffic police in Lalbagh area of Lucknow. The police in Maharashtra`s Latur city have registered cases against eight motorcycle riders for using modified silencers that produce excessive noise, an official said on Sunday. As reported by news agency PTI, the action was taken as part of a drive carried out on Saturday to enforce traffic discipline, curb noise pollution, and ensure public safety, he said. An official further said, “One of the riders was found operating a motorcycle fitted with a modified silencer producing 101.7 decibels, well above permissible limits,” he said. Altogether, eight cases were registered,” as cited by PTI. “Such noise pollution causes severe inconvenience to senior citizens, women, children, and patients suffering from heart conditions and other illnesses. LUCKNOW Illegal structural modifications in the ill-fated bus that met with an accident in the city on Monday have come under the scanner, with transport authorities confirming that the vehicle was altered in violation of norms. Officials said the changes indicate that the bus had been modified illegally to accommodate more passengers than permitted. JEE Main exam date for West Bengal was recently rescheduled by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The testing agency has postponed the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 exam slated for January 23 in view of clash with the auspicious festival of Saraswati Puja. As per the initial schedule, the national-level exam was scheduled between 21 and 29 January. According to the notification issued on Thursday, 15 January, a revised exam date for the state will be announced soon. Muniyappa on Thursday said that only 1.02 lakh below the poverty line (BPL) cards held by government employees and taxpayers had been “modified” as above the poverty line (APL) cards, contrary to the claims of the Opposition BJP which has launched a protest against what they called “massive cancellation of cards of poor people”. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Muniyappa said except for the 1.02 lakh cards (held by government employees and those who file income tax), all other BPL cards would be reissued if there were any erroneous cancellations.
