League stripped to bare bones but fans, players find solace in end of uncertainty

3 min readNew DelhiFeb 13, 2026 10:53 PM IST The Indian Super League (ISL) makes its much-delayed return on Saturday. In the five months since its usual start-time of September, uncertainty swirled to the extent that murmurs persisted that it would never return. But stripped down to bare bones — in some cases not even that —  the league makes a subdued start as defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants take on Kerala Blasters in Kolkata. It will be one of two matches to be played on the opening day, the other being FC Goa against the newly promoted Inter Kashi at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. In the days leading up to this, the ISL went into a coma that was brought about by failures in various boardrooms. At the same time, though, a sizeable section of those involved — fans, players, coaches — are just happy that something is happening. “I know there were a lot of problems. It was a very difficult time for Indian football,” said Mohun Bagan coach Sergio Lobera. …

In doing so, the Mariners became the first team this season to qualify for the playoffs as they now have 46 points from 20 games on the back of 14 victories and four draws. A brilliant second-half brace from Jamie Maclaren and a composed finish from Liston Colaco sealed all three points for the league leaders. This was also their ninth consecutive win at home, registering their 12th clean sheet in the current campaign. Here are the talking points. The Mariners’ flair The Mariners started the game with a lot of flair and panache as they made some dangerous moves down the middle involving Greg Stewart. Mumbai City FC play thrilling draw with Mohun Bagan Super Giants

The new Indian Super League season kicked off with the same old habits. There were breathtaking runs on the wings. Shots that resembled the drop kicks in rugby. Catastrophic defensive blunders. And an almighty tug-of-war between Mumbai City and Mohun Bagan Super Giants. Between them, the two teams have won the majority of the silverware on offer in the last four seasons. And if the opening night was anything to go by, they will remain the teams to beat once again this term. More so Mumbai City FC, who will leave Kolkata with a feeling that they gifted a below-par Bagan a point in a match they dominated from the first whistle. Vulnerable defence Attacking gaffes and defensive errors cost them two points as the league’s most miserly back-line last season – with nine clean sheets – showed signs of vulnerability. It’s amusing when the Indian Super League clubs try to play out from the back. They never tiki-taka their way out but play wobbly, slow passes before switching into panic mode. It might be …
