Legacy ‘Dinosaur’ Languages Are Making a Comeback

Legacy ‘Dinosaur’ Languages Are Making a Comeback

Legacy programming languages, once thought to be relics of the past, are having a surprising comeback. This month, Fortran, Ada, COBOL, and Delphi all vying for positions in the TIOBE Index top 20. Takeaways from the March TIOBE rankings: Python: Recently named “TIOBE’s programming language of the year 2024” in January by TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen continues its meteoric rise. C++: Maintains its stronghold at second place on the leaderboard. Fortran and Delphi: Both legacy languages, are fighting for a spot in the top 10. COBOL and Ada: Both re-entered the top 20 this month. Ada, notably, was the third highest ranking language back in 1985. “I think that it (comeback) has to do with the many vital legacy systems that keep the world running,” Jansen said in the TIOBE Programming Community Index in March. “Most of them are developed with the aid of these dinosaur languages.” A shift in priorities: February vs. March This marks a noticeable shift from February’s rankings, which were dominated by speed-focused languages like C+ +, Go, and Rust. Jansen attributed that trend to the growing need …

Fast Programming Languages Are In Demand

Fast Programming Languages Are In Demand

Fast programming languages are gaining popularity, TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen said in the TIOBE Programming Community Index in February. Fast programming languages he called out include C++, Go, and Rust. Also, according to the updated TIOBE rankings: Python, to which Jansen awarded the title “TIOBE’s programming language of the year 2024” in January, continued to skyrocket. C++ held onto its place at second from the top of the leaderboard. Mojo and Zig are following trajectories likely to bring them into the top 50, and reached #51 and #56 respectively in February. Image: TIOBE Software Speed of programs matters in 2025 “Now that the world needs to crunch more and more numbers per second, and hardware is not evolving fast enough, speed of programs is getting important. Having said this, it is not surprising that the fast programming languages are gaining ground in the TIOBE index,” …

Wrestling’s loss, hockey’s gain: How Deepika developed into a drag flicking forward and rediscovered her striking mojo | Hockey News

Wrestling’s loss, hockey’s gain: How Deepika developed into a drag flicking forward and rediscovered her striking mojo | Hockey News

When she was a kid, Deepika’s father used to take her along to the wrestling centre in Hisar, where her brother trained. Though from a family of wrestlers, originally from a village near Rohtak, Deepika’s heart was never set on wrestling. One day, she went out of the centre and happened to watch hockey. There, hockey coach Azad Singh Malik, who used to train Savita Punia and Sonika, noticed a girl engrossed in the sport. “The first day I saw her, she was sitting attentively and watching us,” Malik told The Indian Express. “She came the next day and sat for a long time, as long as her brother used to practise inside. She was completely engrossed. I told the senior girls ‘if she comes tomorrow too, then bring her to me. It means that she has a lot of interest in playing hockey, junoon sa lag raha hai mere ko.’ Of course, she came. I asked if she wanted to play. She said yes. I gave her a stick and she never stopped coming …

Can Virat Kohli find his mojo against New Zealand at his RCB home base in Bangalore ahead of Australia series? | Cricket News

Virat Kohli bristled towards the practice nets. He scanned the skies to feel the sun, ran his fingers through the trimmed grass, greeted the groundsmen, shook hands with the curator and eyed the net bowlers haggling to bowl first at him. The setting was familiar: Chinnaswamy Stadium is perhaps more home than a home away from home, his association with Royal Challengers Bangalore turning 18 next year. The lack of hundreds would be tossing uneasily somewhere in the innards of his mind—the drought-ending hundred in Ahmedabad did not stir a hurricane but rather a breeze, a mean of 49 runs in 12 innings. He is riding a curious phase where he has not been as emphatic as he had been in his 2014-2019 pomp, a four-year span wherein he was the emperor of all he surveyed, but has not been as miserable as he had been from mid-2019 to early 2023 slump. He has been hitting the in-between frequency. Some of his contemporaries have been catching a second-wind in their careers, Joe Root for one. …

TIOBE Index News October 2024: Rust Climbs the Ranks

TIOBE Index News October 2024: Rust Climbs the Ranks

After C fell from the top three last month, this month’s top programming languages saw relatively little change on the TIOBE Programming Community Index. However, the programming community is on the lookout for a new language with the three most desirable traits: security, speed, and an easy on-ramp for new programmers. This month, we’ll cover the state of search, Rust’s rise in popularity, and the remarkable progress of the Mojo language just one year after its release. At number one, Python jumped from 20.17% in September to 21.9% in October. In second place, C++ rose from 10.75% in September to 11.6%. In third, Java ascended from 9.45% to 10.51%. “Eat Well, Sleep Well And…”: RR Star On Regaining His Mojo In IPL 2024

Eat, sleep. bowl and repeat. Avesh Khan has simplified the mantra of success and it is paying dividends as one saw his performances during key games for Rajasthan Royals in this year’s IPL. With 16 wickets from 15 matches, mostly played on flat decks, an economy rate of 9.81 is praiseworthy and his control at the death has made him look a different bowler this time around. “I have simplified my cricket — I have to sleep (well), I have to eat (well) and I have to bowl (well) and there is nothing else to it,” said Avesh, who took a three-for to help Rajasthan Royals reach Qualifier 2 in IPL here on Wednesday. “The more you would think… cricket is like a circle, the smaller you keep it, the better it will be. You expand this circle more and you will find (more and more) gaps,” he added. “This has changed my life too and also impacted my cricket,”he said. The 27-year-old, who is among India’s reserve players for next month’s T20 …

The Internet Is Drawing A Line From The Big Barbie Snubs To “Mojo Dojo Casa House” IRL

Ryan Gosling in a still from Barbie. (courtesy: YouTube) New Delhi: The Internet ‘ken’not (pun very much intended) help but slam the Academy for snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig for their work in Barbie. While The Academy deemed Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig unworthy of nominations in the Best Actress and Best Director category, respectively, despite their acclaimed work last year, the Internet rooted for both the women. On X (earlier known as Twitter), fans flooded the space with multiple ‘Mojo Dojo Casa House’ references. FYI, in Greta Geriwg’s Barbie, Ryan Gosling’s Ken transforms the Barbieland into a “Kendom” with his newfound power and stereotypes about masculinity after he discovers the concept of patriarchy in the real world. Mojo Dojo Casa House is what he calls it. The Internet was quick to draw the line from the Oscar snubs to the film. “The Oscars are literally just a mojo dojo casa house,” read this post. the Oscars are literally just a mojo dojo casa house https://t.co/7Le5npQ9gr — roni (@readingroni) January 23, 2024 Inputs from …
