Gangster-turned-politician Anant Kumar Singh, who is in jail after being arrested in the murder of Jan Suraaj Party supporter Dular Chand Yadav, bagged the Mokama seat in Bihar on Friday. Singh, a JD(U) candidate, defeated his nearest rival, Veena Singh of the RJD, by 28,206 votes, according to the Election Commission. Singh bagged 91,416 votes, while the RJD nominee secured 63,210 votes. He was arrested for the murder, which rocked the state amid the electioneering, a few days before polling in the seat. The Mokama seat has remained with Singh`s family since 1990, whatever the party affiliation may be, except for a brief interlude. Singh gave the mantle to his wife Neelam Devi in 2022, when his conviction in a UAPA case led to his disqualification from the assembly. The FIR registered in connection with the killing of 75-year-old Dularchand Yadav at Tartar village, which comes under Bihar’s Mokama Assembly constituency, said that during a clash between supporters of the JD(U) and Jan Suraaj parties on October 30, JD(U) candidate Anant Singh allegedly shot at Yadav, before the latter was thrashed by others and then run over with an SUV. The Patna police arrested Anant Singh late on Saturday night, along with two of his aides, Manikant Thakur and Ranjit Ram. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya K Sharma said the arrests followed the scrutiny of CCTV footage, witness statements, and the post-mortem report. “Based on the evidence collected so far, including video footage and witness accounts, it has been found that Anant Singh was present at the spot when the violence occurred. He has been identified as the prime accused and arrested accordingly,” the SSP said. Bihar Police on Sunday arrested don-turned-politician Anant Kumar Singh, popularly known as Chhote Sarkar, in connection with the death of Jan Suraaj supporter Dular Chand Yadav during election campaigning in Mokama three days ago. The JD(U) candidate, who is contesting the election as a NDA nominee, was arrested by the police from his house in Mokama in the wee hours on Sunday. Talking to PTI, Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma confirmed his arrest. He, however, refused to divulge further details.
