Monsoon 2026 tracker LIVE: IMD issues orange alert in two districts in Kerala, thunderstorms, strong winds predicted

The southwest monsoon, which set over Kerala on June 4, marking the beginning of the four-month-long rainy season in India, advanced into North Bengal and the northeastern States on Tuesday (June 9, 2026). North Bengal is the gateway to the eight northeastern States. The weather office said conditions remain favourable for further advance of the monsoon into eastern, central and western India in the next four to five days. Southwest monsoon reaches Kerala, marks official beginning of rainy season

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the official beginning of India`s four-month rainy season, reported the PTI. The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, a few days later than its usual onset date of 1 June. Earlier forecasts had suggested the monsoon would arrive as early as May 26, but its progress was delayed. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has now advanced across the entire Lakshadweep region, Kerala and Mahe, as well as parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The weather system has also expanded over large sections of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin area and several parts of the Bay of Bengal, indicating a steady progression across the country. IMD issues heavy rain and thunderstorm alert across Kerala till June 2 amid monsoon advance

Kerala is set to witness widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds till June 2 as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast favourable conditions for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over large parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during the next two to three days.  According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance further into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep region, the southwest Bay of Bengal, the central-east Bay of Bengal, the central-west Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal and parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal over the coming days.
