Daily all-cause mortality higher for males compared to females: PGI study | Chandigarh News

3 min readChandigarhFeb 6, 2026 02:14 PM IST A new study conducted by a team led by Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, Professor, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGI and Panjab University, has established a critical link between extreme temperature events and increased mortality in Chandigarh. The research identifies a specific temperature threshold beyond which mortality risk spikes, underscoring the urgent need for targeted public health interventions. The study, ‘Extreme temperature events and their relationship with excess all-cause mortality in Chandigarh, India’, published in Nature Scientific Reports, analysed daily mortality data alongside meteorological records over six years (2010-2015), utilising an over-dispersed Poisson Generalised Additive Model (GAM). The research team included Prachi Chauhan, Sanjeev Bhardwaj. Abhishek Kumar, and Dr Suman Mor, which was led by Dr Khaiwal, identified a critical maximum temperature threshold of 33.8°C. Beyond this point, daily all-cause mortality in Chandigarh increases significantly. Dr Khaiwal said, “Our results show a significant increase in all-cause mortality during heatwave conditions, with measurable practical impact, with mortality rising by approximately 4.1% when temperatures exceed this …

I Want To Talk review: Abhishek Bachchan shines in Shoojit Sircar’s drama about mortality | Bollywood

Indian cinema, till date, has had a lot of stories centred on fathers: revenge dramas, comedies, actioners… but seldom one about a terminally ill man who wishes to reconnect with his daughter. (Also read: The Whale movie review: Masterful, moving performances by Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau clash with an overdone story) Abhishek Bachchan plays the lead in I Want to Talk. While the one liner of I Want To Talk forces one to compare it to the 2022 acclaimed Hollywood film The Whale, there’s a big difference here: I Want To Talk is based on a real story, The Whale was not. The plot Abhishek Bachchan plays Arjun Sen, a marketing professional, who is diagnosed with last stage cancer, and he is told by doctors he has about 100 days to live. Naturally worried, he starts spending more time with his daughter Reya (younger version played by Pearle Dey) as his divorce with his wife Indrani is finalised. He even thinks of ending it all one day, only to be convinced otherwise by his …

Music Review: The Cure return after a long break to look at mortality with one of their best albums

You might think that after being silent for 16 years, The Cure would be in a rush to get things going. Think again. It takes over three minutes of “Alone” — the first song on their new album — before we finally hear Robert Smith’s voice. The Cure are back, but definitely on their terms. Music Review: The Cure return after a long break to look at mortality with one of their best albums The eight-track album “Songs of a Lost World” is lush and deeply orchestral, swelling and powerful, with often several minutes of instruments jamming before any singing. There are melancholic and mournful lyrics that confront mortality and wonder where time went. “I’m outside in the dark/Wondering/How I got so old,” Smith sings in the last, sprawling, heartbreaking song. “Songs of a Lost World” is, indeed, not of this world. None of the tunes are under four minutes and the last one saunters past 10. In an era when music is fashioned for microbursts on TikTok, Smith is disinterested. He lets songs take …

Infant Mortality Rate and Decline of Bat Population Might Have a Strange Correlation, Study Claims

In 2006, a fungal disease called white-nose syndrome began decimating bat populations across New England. Over the following decade, the loss of these bats, essential for controlling insect populations, led to significant consequences for agriculture and human health, according to a new study. With fewer bats around to consume insects, farmers resorted to increased use of insecticides, resulting in a 31 percent rise in pesticide application, according to a report. This increase has been associated with an 8 percent rise in infant mortality in affected areas. Impact on Agriculture and Human Health Bats play a crucial role in natural pest control, with some species consuming around 40 percent of their body weight in insects every night. Researchers, led by economist Eyal Frank from the University of Chicago, noted in his study published in the Science journal that when bat populations plummeted, farmers responded by using more insecticides to compensate for the loss. The additional insecticide use grew by about 2 kilograms per square kilometre over five years. Meanwhile, fungicide and herbicide use remained unchanged. Infant …

No mortality or rise in spread of Omicron variants in India: Centre | Latest News India

Sentinel sequencing of 324 Covid positive samples collected from the community over a period of 10 days has revealed the presence of all Omicron variants, but no mortality or rise in transmission in the areas where these variants were detected, the Union health ministry said on Monday. “Since 29th December, 2022 to 7th January, 2023, Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) sentinel sites referred 324 Covid-19 positive samples for sequencing to 22 INSACOG labs. Sentinel sequencing of these positive samples lifted from the community revealed presence of all the Omicron variants like BA.2 and its sub-lineages including BA.2.75, XBB (37), BQ.1 & BQ.1.1 (5), etc,” the ministry said in a statement. “No mortality or rise in transmission were reported in the areas where these variants were detected,” it added. The health ministry’s statement came as several countries, particularly China, are reporting a surge in Covid-19 cases. India initiated random testing of international travellers arriving at various airports on December 24. “The Union health ministry is keeping a close watch on the Covid-19 situation in various States …
