Amrish Puri joked about feeling ‘trapped’ by Mogambo, was asked to repeat his iconic dialogue wherever he went, recalls Shekhar Kapur | Bollywood News

4 min readFeb 28, 2026 02:39 PM IST Mogambo needs no introduction. Anyone who has heard of Mr India, knows that the character is etched in history (much like Gabbar Singh from Sholay). Even decades later, audiences vividly remember Amrish Puri’s towering performance, especially the iconic line penned by Javed Akhtar, “Mogambo khush hua”.  Recently, director Shekhar Kapur revealed that he had no idea the character, and particularly that line, would become so iconic. In a conversation with The Lallantop, Shekhar recalled his first discussion with Javed about Mogambo. Amrish Puri was done with Mogambo Shekhar recalled his chat with Javed and said, “When I asked him what the character of Mogambo was, he gave me this line, ‘Mogambo khush hua.’ I asked him, ‘Are you convinced with it?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ That’s why I tried to make the line interesting by shooting it in a way that whenever he says it, he is either playing with his rings or delivering it in ten or fifteen different ways.” Shekhar added that Javed had foreseen the …

Taking to his Instagram handle on Wednesday, Sikander shared the clip where Anupam can be heard talking about his numb cheek. As Sikandar teased Anupam, Anupam asked him, “Kya karne wala hai (What are you about to do)?” Right before Sikander was about to hit the veteran actor, Anupam warned him, “Zyada zor se laga na, ulte haath ka marunga, naak pe teri, naak tod dunga (If I get hurt badly, I’ll slap you on your nose and break it).” He then pretended to hit him on his cheek, and Anupam played along as he held his cheek. Jackie Shroff spun Urmila Matondkar so aggressively in ‘Hai Rama’ she got a bruise, recalls Ahmed Khan: ‘I was too young to…’ | Bollywood News

Ahmed Khan’s breakthrough as a choreographer happened with Ram Gopal Varma’s 1995 blockbuster romantic film Rangeela. One of his most memorable songs from the film was “Hai Rama,” filmed on Jackie Shroff and Urmila Matondkar. Ahmed recently recalled how in a dance sequence, Jackie lifted and spun Urmila so aggressively that she even got a bruise. “Jaggu da makes it look very rough, but he’s not. He’s a soft man. But the way he held her, he got Urmila in one or two places. We were shooting their catfight sequence in Mehboob Studio. He had to turn and spin her. He really spun her because that’s the moment we wanted her to take a full pivot. That’s when she got a bruise on her arm,” recalls Ahmed on the inaugural edition of SCREEN Spotlight. “Jaggu da told me, ‘Bhedu, tu tension mat le. Main sab sambhal loonga.’ And I was very young to tell him to hold the girl passionately. How would a 19-year-old teach it, that too to Jaggu da? I still remember Jaggu …

Kishore Kumar was ‘busy clowning’ during Mr India recording, says Alisha Chinai: ‘He gave me a look…left without a word’ | Bollywood News

It was in 1987 that Boney Kapoor released Mr India, directed by Shekhar Kapur. The sci-fi classic, starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles, was shot over nearly a year. Written by the legendary duo Salim–Javed—who split after this film—the movie remains unforgettable, thanks to iconic characters like Mogambo and Mr India, and evergreen songs such as “Kate Nahin Kat Te” and “Hawa Hawai”. While Mr India evokes nostalgia for many, for singer Alisha Chinai—the voice behind the sensual “Kate Nahin Kat Te”—it also marks her memorable experience of recording with Kishore Kumar. Alisha was barely 21 or 22 when she stepped into the studio to record the duet with Kishore Kumar, who was more than twice her age and already an icon. Composers Laxmikant–Pyarelal were at the helm. Terrified she might forget her lines, Alisha found Kishore da busy “clowning around,” barely acknowledging her presence. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Alisha recalled: “I was so lucky and fortunate that I got to sing with him. After my song with Bappi Lahiri, I …

Can you imagine Mr India without Anil Kapoor? Javed Akhtar reveals THIS superstar was original choice for film

Anil Kapoor-led Mr. India is one of the most iconic films of the Indian film industry. It has etched a special place in the hearts of the audience, and people still re-watch it. However, can you imagine the film without Anil Kapoor? Well, screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently revealed that Mr. India was written keeping Amitabh Bachchan in mind, as he was the first choice. He also shared how Anil came on board.  In an interview with Mid-day on the Sit With Hitlist series, Javed Akhtar confirmed that Amitabh Bachchan was the first choice for Mr. India, whose script was written by Salim-Javed. He recalled that director and producer Pramod Chakravorty had started working on the film with Big B in the lead.  However, the superstar couldn’t make it to the muhurat shot, and instead his voice was played on a cassette. That gave the veteran lyricist the idea that they can make an ‘invisible man’ using his ‘popular and effective’ voice.  He said, “That gave me an idea that if this voice is so popular …

Salim Khan had the ‘final say’ in our relationship, says Javed Akhtar as he reveals if Amitabh Bachchan was behind their split: ‘Didn’t work with him for 10 years’ | Bollywood News

Salim Khan had the ‘final say’ in our relationship, says Javed Akhtar as he reveals if Amitabh Bachchan was behind their split: ‘Didn’t work with him for 10 years’ | Bollywood News

Salim-Javed changed the way people looked at screenwriters in India with their stunts like hiring painters to add their names to posters of Zanjeer, demanding more money than the stars of the films, and delivering multiple hits in a row. Together, the duo wrote about 20 films, which included iconic films such as Deewaar, Sholay, Trishul, Don among others. However, in 1982, the duo decided to part ways. Their split came with a lot of rumours as neither of addressed it at that time. Some rumours even suggested that it was perhaps Javed’s closeness with Amitabh Bachchan that caused tension between the writer duo and in a recent interview, Javed addressed the same. Salim Khan is a little older than Javed Akhtar and while the two treated each other at par when it came to work, there was a certain sense of hierarchy in their social dealings. Javed said that he saw Salim and his wife Salma Khan in a parental role in his life, but more often that not, he was like an elder …

Mr India was originally conceived for Amitabh Bachchan before Salim-Javed’s split, Javed Akhtar reveals: ‘I developed it completely on my own’ | Bollywood News

It’s hard to imagine Mr. India without Anil Kapoor, but veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently revealed that he wasn’t the first choice for the role. In a recent interview with Mid-Day India, Javed revealed that the original inspiration behind the film came from none other than Amitabh Bachchan, who is known for his baritone. Recalling how the idea was sparked, he said that during a film’s muhurat (launch), that was to be done by Amitabh Bachchan, the actor was not available in person. So, it was decided that his voice would be played at the muhurat. “He had to do the mahurat, and because of some reason, they recorded the voice of Amitabh and played it during the muhurat shot. So, that gave me an idea — if this voice is so popular, so effective, why can’t we make the Invisible Man with him? We wouldn’t have to take his dates also. Most of the time, we could shoot and he would later dub his voice… That is how the idea started,” he shared. He …
