MMRDA official slams traffic police for lax patrolling over rising suicides on Atal Setu | Mumbai News
Amid increasing incidents of suicides on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), with two cases in the past week, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has criticised traffic police for failing to conduct regular patrolling on MTHL, the country’s longest sea bridge connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. According to police officials, five incident of suicides have been reported from the MTHL so far while another bid by a Mulund-based woman was averted by the timely intervention by a taxi driver and the traffic police. A senior MMRDA official told The Indian Express that while the MMRDA is responsible for building and maintaining the corridor, it is the duty of the traffic police to curb incidents such as suicides or other violations. The official also said that the Navi Mumbai Traffic Police had written to the MMRDA, suggesting the installation of nets along the bridge to prevent suicide attempts.
