Sathyamoorthy A radio-tagged white-rumped vulture, which had been released in the Mudumalai-Bandipur region in April this year, was captured on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) after it was found near a human settlement in Kalhatti on the fringes of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR). The captive-bred vulture from the Tadoba-Andheri Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra was released in 2025 and had made its way to Kalaburagi in Karnataka, where it was captured and treated after it was found to be unwell. Following this, it was released in the Mudumalai-Bandipur complex in the hopes that it would associate with other white-rumped vultures in the region. However, the bird was once again found to be in poor health and was not associating with other vultures. Over the past two days, it had perched itself overlooking the Kalhatti ghat, prompting the Forest department to step in and capture it. Sloth bear captured, released into Mudumalai Tiger Reserve

A sloth bear was captured from Yedakkadu village near Kundha in the Nilgiris and released in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) by the Forest Department staff on Sunday. The Department had set up cages at Sathyamoorthy Nagar after the death of a 35-year-old man from a suspected bear attack in the area recently. Following its capture on Sunday, veterinarians from the Forest Department checked the sloth bear’s health before its release in the Theppakadu Forest Range in MTR. A sloth bear, believed to be the one caught on Sunday, is said to have been breaking into buildings in search of food in the area. Following the man’s death, a decision was taken to trap and release the animal. Officials said that the elephant calf was found in STR in March this year, and after efforts to trace and reunite the animal with its herd had failed, a decision was reached to raise it at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. However, the calf had been unwell for the last few weeks, and despite the veterinarians’ efforts to treat the animal, it died early Thursday morning, officials added. Forest dept. seeks court intervention in eradicating invasive plants in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

A worker engaging in debarking a senna tree in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) authorities are planning to approach the Kerala High Court to grant permission to extract Senna spectabilis, an invasive plant which poses a major threat to the wildlife habitat in the Nilgiri biosphere, to eradicate the species from the sanctuary. Since the existing norms would not allow cutting down trees from a protected area or a wildlife sanctuary, extraction of trees is not possible, sanctuary sources said. But the Mudumalai and Sathyamangalam tiger reserves (STR) in Tamil Nadu had obtained a favourable order from the Chennai High Court after convincing the Court about the gravity of the situation. The Court ordered the removal of over 60 hectares in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and 645 hectares in STR. The Forest department collaborated with Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) to remove the trees, for which it was asked to pay a conservation charge of ₹4,200 a tonne. The four people washed away in Monday night’s flash flood were identified as S. Sushila, 56, M. Vimala, 35, B. Saroja, 65 and R. Vasuki, 45, all from Kadanad near Ooty. Until Tuesday afternoon, only Sushila’s body was yet to be found by officials and personnel from the police and Forest Departments as well as Fire and Rescue Service personnel. 200 people rescued since December 11 night P.
