Sacred Games changed Indian entertainment in 2018, the year of Stree and October: 25 Years of Indian Cinema | Bollywood News

I have two words to tell you how significant this year was, in the landscape of Indian entertainment, and no, it isn’t the name of a film: Sacred Games. Netflix’s first original show, based on Vikram Chandra’s book of the same name, Sacred Games turned out to be an absolute gamechanger. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the cop-and-mobster, and a bunch of other notables (Pankaj Tripathi, Ranvir Shorey, Aamir Bashir, Kalki Koechlin, Radhike Apte amongst others), this two part show, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, changed the way we would consume ‘content’ going forward. Not that Sacred Games could be accused of being generic content. This very Bombay story had the zing that Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet lacked, and though the second part was nowhere as good as the first, the two-hander ensured that web series were here to stay, kickstarted the popularity of streaming platforms in India: after Netlix came Amazon, followed by SonyLIV, and Disney Plus (now Jio Hotstar) and several others. Mirzapur is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. A …

Anubhav Sinha may have reinvented himself in the last seven years with socially conscious cinema like Mulk (2018), Article 15 (2019), and Thappad (2020), but the failure of his 2011 superhero film Ra.One continued to haunt him for the longest time. Though he maintains he had a great time working with Shah Rukh Khan, the baggage of that setback stayed with him for years. “It didn’t turn out the way all of us wanted to do. It was a heartbreak, which I carried in my heart, chest, and shoulders until 2018, when Mulk released. I’d almost given up on myself as a director. I’d decided I won’t direct,” said Sinha. “I wrote Mulk in the next three days. I went out in the market, money took a bit of time. And then I went there and made it. It had become impossible to not make it,” added the filmmaker. In the interview with Faye D’Souza, Anubhav Sinha said he was “flabbergasted” when Ra.One was about to release. “We were travelling against time. Tonight, we’re in …
