Mumbai civic polls: BJP wrests control of BMC; Shiv Sena (UBT) relegated to Opposition

In the second phase of local body elections held in Mumbai, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the highest number of seats in Mumbai, while Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) finished second and to take the position of a “strong” Opposition for the first time in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The BJP is leading with 89 seats, while its alliance partner Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has 29 seats in the BMC. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has won 65 seats, the MNS has won six seats, and the Congress managed to survive with 24 seats. Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won three seats, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP won one seat. The surprising element was the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) winning eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party got two seats. According to data released by the civic body, ward number 114 in suburban Bhandup recorded the highest turnout at 64.53%, while ward number 227 in south Mumbai’s Colaba area reported the lowest turnout at 20.88%. BMC elections 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2026 will be held on January 15, 2016. Established in 1873, India’s financial capital’s civic body is the country’s largest and richest, with a budget dwarfing that of several states. The deadline for withdrawing nominations was on January 2, while the counting of votes for the BMC election is scheduled for January 16. Structure of BMC and how elections are conducted: Mumbai is divided into 24 administrative wards. From sewerage operations to public health, the BMC handles local civic issues in these wards, named alphabetically from A to T. Each administrative ward is further subdivided into smaller electoral wards for which corporators are elected. There are 227 of these electoral wards. Out of these, 113 fall under the General Category, while 114 are reserved for women, including women belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, and the Backwards Class of Citizens. Ten days ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the Mumbai unit of the Indian National Congress (INC) on Sunday released a manifesto exclusively focused on reviving the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking. Titled BEST Revival: 9-Point Action Plan, the document has been issued under the banner “Mission BEST Bachao” by Congress leaders Sachin Sawant and MP and Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee president Varsha Gaikwad. Pitching BEST as an essential public service, the Congress said the civic transport undertaking should not be run with a profit motive. The party blamed the current administrator-led system and increasing dependence on private contractors for rising costs, service cuts and declining reliability. The manifesto proposes that all operational expenses of BEST be borne directly by the BMC, with additional funds raised through parking fees and other municipal charges. It also states that bus fares should not be increased without a public hearing and a recommendation from an independent committee. A key promise in the plan is to halt privatisation.
