Berhane Tesfay and Joyce Chepkemoi clinch respective titles

Mumbai witnessed a thrilling day of long-distance running as new champions emerged at the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025. Eritrea’s Berhane Tesfay and Kenya’s Joyce Chepkemoi Tele claimed the elite men’s and women’s titles, respectively, in this World Athletics Gold Label Road Race. Tesfay, 38, clocked 2:11:44 to secure his maiden international marathon title, with Eritrean compatriot Merhawi Kesete (2:11:50) finishing second and Ethiopia’s Tesfaye Demeke (2:11:56) taking third. Tesfay’s strategic push in the final 3 kilometers helped him outpace other contenders, including Kenya’s Philemon Rono and defending champion Lemi Berhanu of Ethiopia, who settled for sixth place. In the women’s race, 29-year-old Joyce Chepkemoi Tele triumphed with a time of 2:24:56, adding another victory to her growing list of accolades after winning the NLB Ljubljana Marathon last year. Bahrain’s Shitaye Eshete (2:25:29) and Ethiopia’s Medina Deme Armino (2:27:58) completed the podium.. Among Indian runners, Anish Thapa claimed the top spot in the men’s category with 2:17:23, while Nirmaben Thakor defended her women’s title with a finish of 2:50:06. The race’s first half went smoothly, and I stayed focused on keeping a steady pace. After 25K, my strategy shifted to securing the win rather than chasing a specific time. This victory means a lot to me, and it’s a testament …
