Mumbaikar’s tired of the long haul to Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar? New metro line 5 and 5A may cut the grind | Mumbai News

A metro corridor once planned as a limited Thane–Bhiwandi link has now evolved into a longer, more complex network that could significantly change how people travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The revised Metro Line 5, along with its extension Line 5A, stretches from Kapurbawdi in Thane through Bhiwandi to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar bringing mass rapid transit to areas that have long depended on overcrowded suburban trains and road transport. While the project was first approved in 2017, only its initial phase moved forward. The latest redesign not only revives stalled sections but also reworks the alignment to overcome earlier on-ground challenges. The ₹18,130.55-crore project was approved on Wednesday at a meeting of the state’s infrastructure development committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. How the alignment has changed The biggest shift lies in the Bhiwandi–Kalyan stretch, which had been stuck for years due to land constraints and concerns over traffic disruption. Originally planned as an elevated corridor, a key section between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar has now been moved underground. The earlier plan would …

Why MMRDA is retaining the consultant it threatened to sack after the fatal Mulund metro collapse

3 min readMumbaiApr 21, 2026 10:03 PM IST Citing nearly 80 per cent completion of work on Metro Line 4 and the risk of delay if a new consultant were appointed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Tuesday justified its decision to retain the general consultant it had threatened to sack following the fatal Mulund slab collapse, calling it a move taken “strictly in the larger public interest”. The clarification came a day after The Indian Express reported about MMRDA going back on its earlier stance and deciding to continue with DB Hill–LBG consortium as the general consultant (of GC) for Metro Line 4. The agency had earlier announced its intention to terminate the contract in the aftermath of the February 14 incident in Mulund, when a parapet slab fell onto LBS Road, killing one person and injuring three others. “Given that the project has already achieved nearly 80% physical progress, and that appointing a new general consultant at this stage would require approximately 3–4 months, potentially delaying the project and impacting public …
