Sarfaraz Khan’s stunning catches, pacers power Mumbai to innings win over Puducherry to claim top spot | Cricket News

Shardul Thakur sat on the steps outside the Wankhede Stadium dressing room, talking to a few fans after yet another satisfying result as captain. His side climbed to the top of the points table after a comprehensive innings and 222 runs win over Puducherry early on the fourth day to enter the white-ball leg on a high. Resuming the day on 231/6, it took the Mumbai bowlers only 8.3 overs to seal matters with a bonus point and clinch their second straight innings victory on home turf. This win might have been sweeter for Thakur and his boys as it came at a venue that was staging its first Ranji Trophy match since the 2023-24 final. Sarfaraz shines as fielder The headline act for three out of the four wickets was given by Sarfaraz Khan, who took three varied catches to help claim the wickets. The first was to dismiss Siddhant Aadhhathrao, where he flew to his left and grabbed the ball with both hands to give Tushar Deshpande his first wicket of the day. …

Haryana-Mumbai quarterfinal moved from Lahli to Kolkata at last minute

Haryana-Mumbai quarterfinal moved from Lahli to Kolkata at last minute

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to change the venue of the Mumbai-Haryana Ranji Trophy quarter-final from Lahli to Kolkata at the last moment citing ‘unavoidable circumstances’. BCCI game development manager Abey Kuruvila has informed Haryana Cricket Association and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of the change. MCA had already booked flight tickets for its 18-member squad and they were supposed to fly to Delhi early morning on Wednesday. “We were informed by mail that the Ranji Trophy game between Haryana and Mumbai, to be played in Lahli, has been shifted to Eden Gardens in Kolkata due to unavoidable circumstances. Cricket Association of Bengal will be hosting and taking care of all arrangements,” an MCA official said. No official reason has been given but it is understood that fog and cold could be the reason. Jammu & Kashmir will play their quarterfinal against Kerala in Pune instead of their home venue for the same reason. © The Indian Express Pvt Ltd Expand Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, …

Karnataka quarters chances stubbed by Haryana, Mumbai roll out big guns

Karnataka quarters chances stubbed by Haryana, Mumbai roll out big guns

Saurashtra’s hopes of making it to the quarterfinals are well and truly alive, while Haryana put an end to Karnataka’s qualification chances on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy. Here is a look at what unfolded across the different venues. Luck seems to be smiling on Mumbai to make it to the quarterfinals. While a win with a bonus point against Meghalaya was a given, they needed help from one of Jammu & Kashmir or Baroda. And their prayers are being answered by J&K, which had incidentally defeated Mumbai in the previous round. Having restricted group-leaders J&K to 246 in the first innings, Baroda needed to overhaul the total for their passage to the quarterfinals. Instead, J&K spinners weaved a web around Baroda to shut them out for 166 with off-spinner Sahil Lotra being the pick of the bowlers with four wickets (4-26 in 25.1 overs). And having taken a huge lead, J&K have started their second essay on a strong note in Vadodara. J&K now have a lead of 205 and have nine wickets …

Mumbai’s lower order saves Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal the blushes

Mumbai’s lower order saves Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal the blushes

They came for the elegance of Rohit Sharma and the fearlessness of Yashasvi Jaiswal. But stayed back for the brave strokeplay of Shardul Thakur and a stubborn Tanush Kotian. Shortly past 10, the office-goers in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai’s swanky business district, filled the few hundred seats at the Mumbai Cricket Association Ground. Those who couldn’t bunk work stood in the balconies of the towers surrounding the stadium. For the city’s cricket tragics, this was another chance to watch Rohit and Yashasvi. The context mattered, too — the India internationals had a chance to dig Mumbai out of a hole, having conceded the first-innings lead in their Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir. Rohit and Yashasvi couldn’t — like in the first innings, they were dismissed in the first session of the day. Yet, the grass banks remained full, watching in awe the fight back led by a cramping Thakur, who scored a brilliant hundred despite falling to the ground twice in pain, and a resolute Kotian. When Kotian joined Thakur in the middle, Mumbai …

Ajinkya Rahane ahead of Ranji Trophy game against J and K

Ajinkya Rahane ahead of Ranji Trophy game against J and K

A star studded Mumbai line-up is all set to light up the league game of Ranji Trophy as Indian captain Rohit Sharma and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will walk out to play against Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at the MCA-BKC ground starting from Thursday. Rohit’s return to domestic cricket has been the result of a series of bad form in red ball cricket lately. A 1-3 series loss in Australia forced the Indian board to come up with new guidelines for its contracted players which ensured its premium cricketers turn up for their respective states. Sharma’s last appearance for the Mumbai team was in 2015 against Uttar Pradesh. He had a series of bad knocks in India’s tour of Australia, scoring 3,9, 10, 3, 6 runs in four Test matches, averaging around 10.93, and then decided to step down for the last Test against Australia in Sydney. Is the bad phase and lack of runs running in Sharma’s mind? Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane says he is confident that Rohit will bounce back. “I know Rohit. Rohit …

Ranji Trophy: Ruturaj Gaikwad hits classy hundred but Mumbai on the verge of victory over Maharashtra | Cricket News

Ranji Trophy: Ruturaj Gaikwad hits classy hundred but Mumbai on the verge of victory over Maharashtra | Cricket News

Defending champions Mumbai are 61 runs away from victory over Maharashtra, with all 10 wickets intact going into the final day, which would be the perfect recovery after losing their opening match of the Ranji season to Baroda. After being on the receiving end for the past two days at the MCA-BKC ground, Maharashtra came back stronger in their second innings, but it may all back to naught as it was too big an ask after being bowled out for 126 in the first innings. The visitors made Mumbai toil hard for wickets and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (145) took the onus on himself, getting good support from young Sachin Dhas (98) and veteran Ankit Bawne (101). Gaikwad and 19-year-old opener Dhas added 222 runs for the second wicket to keep Maharashtra in the game. They looked solid with runs flowing with ease. Mumbai had to employ new tactics and tried to stop Gaikwad by bowling a negative line, hoping he would make a mistake. They also bowled short and kept fielders in the deep, but …

Ranji Trophy: ‘Big, big relief’ for Shardul Thakur as he smashes first FC ton, but India return not on his mind at the moment | Cricket News

It came 11 years after he made his debut, in his 81st match and a couple of months after being dropped from Team India. It’s a ‘big, big relief’, admitted Shardul Thakur after scoring a counter-attacking century on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy semifinals against Tamil Nadu on Sunday. But the Mumbai pacer is conscious the ton might not immediately open the doors for him to get back into the Test squad. After being axed from the ODI and T20 squad last year, Thakur was dropped from the Test team during India’s tour to South Africa in January. “I think an international comeback is far from now because the Test team is out already for the fifth game and after this, we are going into the IPL so it’s far,” Thakur said after the second day’s play at the MCA-BKC ground. “I am not thinking that far. But yes, scoring a century is a big, big relief and it was very important for the team at that point of time.” His knock of 109 …

Shardul Thakur scores maiden first-class hundred to pull Mumbai out of danger as Iyer, Rahane and Shaw fumble in early batting collapse | Cricket News

Mumbai were seven wickets down with just 108 runs on the board when Shardul Thakur walked in to bat in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Tamil Nadu. Even though the latter had put together 146 runs, they still had the lead. However, the Indian bowling all-rounder shifted the momentum of the game by scoring his maiden first-class hundred to put the 41-time Ranji Trophy winners in the driving seat. Coincidentally, Shardul’s previous highest first-class score had also come batting at number nine, and at the back of a similar batting collapse. Back in 2014 against Uttar Pradesh, Shardul helped Mumbai score 270 – courtesy his 82 – after being seven wickets down for 123. Prithvi Shaw declared fit, to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai | Cricket News

Opening batsman Prithvi Shaw has been cleared for fitness by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and will play Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy game against Bengal in Kolkata from February 2. Shaw has been on the sidelines because of a knee injury and will be playing a competitive game after six months. Shaw had injured his knee in August while playing a one-day game for Northamptonshire. He was in fine touch after making 244 and 125 not out before injury struck. “He has been declared fit and can take part in the Ranji Trophy games. The BCCI has informed the MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) about it,” a BCCI official confirmed. Shaw has been batting in the practice nets at the NCA in Bengaluru. An MRI had revealed that Shaw had grade-II tear of posterior cruciate ligament. Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I so far for India since having made his senior team debut back in 2018. Source link
