Bombay HC allows CBI’s plea, refuses permission to Sheena Bora murder accused Indrani Mukerjea to travel abroad | Mumbai News

The Bombay High Court on Friday allowed a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging a special court’s permission to former media executive Indrani Mukerjea to travel abroad. A single-judge bench of Justice Shyam C Chandak set aside the special court order. The judge clarified that if Mukerjea wished to perform in India the works that she intended to complete abroad, the statutory authorities shall extend necessary help to her. Justice Chandak added that he had not gone into the merits of the case and held that the special court order was ‘unreasonable’, ‘unsustainable’, and deserved to be quashed and set aside. The bench passed an order in the plea by the central agency challenging the July 19 special court order permitting Mukerjea, who is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012 and is currently out on bail, to travel abroad once for 10 days within the three months from the date of the said order. Dombivli reactor blast: Chemical company owner’s wife, who is director in firm, held | Mumbai News

Sneha Mehta (35), the wife of Amudan Chemical Pvt Ltd owner Malay Mehta (38) and one of the two directors in the firm, was arrested by Thane police crime branch on Tuesday in connection with the May 23 reactor blast in the company in Dombivli MIDC in which 10 people were killed.  Sixty eight people were injured in the incident and nine people are still missing. “Sneha, who is director in the Amudan company along with her husband Malay, was questioned and after her role was established in the preliminary probe, she was placed under arrest. She will be produced in court tomorrow,” said senior inspector Ashok Koli of Thane crime branch. The death toll in the incident is likely to increase as charred bodies and body parts recovered from the incident site are beyond recognition. Only three of the deceased have been identified as of now, and nine families are yet to get a “confirmation” about their missing family members. The police are depending on DNA tests to ascertain the identity of the deceased. …

MahaRERA suspends nearly 20,000 agents’ registrations for not having competency certificates | Mumbai News

The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has suspended nearly 20,000 real estate agents’ registrations after they failed to obtain the required competency certificates. Effective January 1, it is compulsory for all agents to complete their training, pass an examination, and register their certifications with MahaRERA, failing which they they will be suspended for a year, officials announced on Thursday. Ajoy Mehta, chairman of MahaRERA, emphasised on the critical role agents play in connecting homebuyers with developers. He stated that agents provide primary project information to potential homebuyers and must be knowledgeable about the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, developer credibility, land titles, RERA-compliant carpet areas, commencement certificates and local authority approvals. “It is essential for real estate agents to be well-versed in industry regulations and project specifics. Despite mandatory certification requirements, many agents remain unqualified, leading to the suspension of their approvals. MahaRERA will also cancel the registration of developers who engage with unqualified agents. Developers must heed this warning,” Mehta said. Ghatkopar hoarding collapse: Former GRP chief allowed hoarding work without permission from DGP office: Police | Mumbai News

Former Government Railway Police (GRP) commissioner Quaiser Khalid permitted hoarding work at Ghatkopar without taking mandatory permission from the office of Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP), according to a senior IPS officer. On Monday, the said hoarding collapsed on a petrol pump, killing 14 people and injuring 75 others. Even as the police rules state that a mandatory prior approval from the DGP office is required before permitting the erection of a hoarding, Khalid gave his nod to Ego Media Pvt Ltd to install it on GRP land, without approval. The officer confirmed that the matter came to light in early 2023, after the new GRP commissioner Ravindra Shisve took charge and discovered the alleged irregularity. “He ordered an internal inquiry, analysed the project documents and submitted a report to the DGP office about the same,” the senior IPS officer told The Indian Express on condition of anonymity. BMC draws up Rs 209 cr plan for storm water drain along Andheri subway | Mumbai News

In a new attempt to abate flooding woes in Mumbai’s Andheri area, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has chalked out a Rs 209 crore plan which will involve constructing a new storm water drain (SWD) network that will run parallel to the Andheri subway. Andheri subway is one of Mumbai’s spots that floods frequently and is a primary east-west connector used by motorists. However, every year during monsoon, the subways stay shut on most days. Between June and October in 2023, the subway was shut 21 times by public authorities. Ahead of every monsoon, BMC sets up multiple dewatering pumps inside the subway. Civic officials said the proposed drain will be six metres wide and two metres deep. At present, there are three different SWD lines of one metre each. “Since there is no scope of widening the existing drainage networks, we have planned to lay a parallel drain. Man held for raping, impregnating mentally challenged minor girl | Mumbai News

ANDHERI POLICE police have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly raping a mentally challenged 15-year-old girl for five months. The accused, who lives in girl’s neighborhood, would allegedly call the girl at his place and rape her, the police has said. Recently, when the girl missed her period her mother took her to the doctor, who told her that the girl was 10-weeks pregnant. When the girl was asked about it she said that the accused neighbor did this to her. On her mother’s complaint the police arrested the accused person. Source link

Court allows withdrawal of FIR in ‘fake’ TRP case against Arnab Goswami, 21 others | Mumbai News

A metropolitan magistrate court at Esplanade Wednesday allowed the plea by Mumbai Police crime branch to withdraw the FIR filed against 22 accused, including Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, in the alleged fake Television Rating Points (TRP) case. The state government through Mumbai Police had filed an application seeking withdrawal of the case in November, last year. Metropolitan Magistrate L S Padhen permitted withdrawal of the FIR concerned after the special public prosecutor Shishir Hiray representing Police submitted that continuation of criminal proceedings may not lead to conviction in the case and therefore application filed under section 321 (withdrawal of prosecution) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Detailed order will be made available in due course. Amended RTE rule: Parents ask whether govt schools will provide same quality of education as private ones | Mumbai News

The Maharashtra government has amended the Right To Education (RTE) Act, whereby private unaided schools located within a kilometre radius of a government school need not have to abide by the 25 per cent RTE admissions and instead the same will be done through government schools. However, parents and educationists have raised questions as to whether there are enough state-run schools and are they well-equipped from infrastructure point of view to provide the same quality of education. According to the amended rules of implementation of RTE in the state, private schools within one-kilometre vicinity of a government or aided school in Maharashtra will not be obligated to provide admissions under the RTE quota for students from economically backward sections of the society, which was a mandatory requirement for all unaided and private schools so far. While most dissenting voices have already raised concerns that the amended rule dilutes the RTE Act provision, Anubha Sahay from India Wide Parents’ Association, also questioned if there are enough government schools. “The number of government schools is not big. …
