25 minutes to 10: How a reverse lane is easing traffic at Mumbai’s BKC connector junction | Mumbai News

2 min readMumbaiJun 18, 2026 03:21 PM IST To tackle peak-hour bottlenecks near the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) connector, where vehicles bound for South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs constantly vie for space, the Mumbai traffic police have introduced a reverse lane system during morning rush hours. The initiative, implemented by the Chunabhatti traffic division from June 5, targets the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), a vital arterial route linking Mumbai’s eastern suburbs to South Mumbai. During the morning peak hours, a significant number of vehicles travel from Thane and other suburbs towards South Mumbai. Similarly, nearly as many vehicles head towards Nehru Nagar and BKC via the BKC connector, resulting in daily traffic congestion. An officer said the reverse lane was initiated on the southbound side of the Nehru Nagar-Kurla Bridge as needed. “It commences from the southbound carriageway near Siddharth Colony, Chembur East, transitioning to the northbound carriageway, and extending up to the descent of the BKC Connector Bridge,” the officer said. “The reverse lane will be opened or closed, depending on traffic flow …

Why Mumbai’s water supply is under pressure this monsoon season and who will be hit

Mumbai has tightened water conservation measures as reservoir levels supplying the city continue to decline amid a delayed southwest monsoon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced fresh restrictions on water use, saying the move is necessary to preserve drinking water supplies. However, with rains arriving later than expected and inflows remaining below normal, water levels have fallen sharply ahead of the peak monsoon period. As of Tuesday, the reservoirs …

BMC plans to eliminate Mumbai’s 147 ‘garbage vulnerable points’

3 min readMumbaiMay 17, 2026 08:29 PM IST The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has charted plans to eliminate 147 Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) identified across the city that includes unauthorised dumping spots at high footfall locations and piles of waste along informal settlements. The GVPs will be tackled through ward-based action plans, including increased deployment of collection services, installation of CCTV cameras for monitoring and behavioural change campaigns. Every day, the city generates over 7,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste. Of this, a large quantum is collected from GVPs, where garbage is dumped by residents, commuters and pedestrians. Typically situated in high footfall pockets such as markets or within informal settlements where waste collection vehicles are unable to enter, GVPs are a pain point for the civic body and citizens alike as they attract pests, spread odour, and pose significant threat to public health and environment. Officials across 26 wards identified 147 points with the highest concentrations in Chembur, Mahul, Deonar, Dadar and Malwani. Data procured by The Indian Express shows that at 37, …

100 homes razed in Mumbai’s Darukhana as Port Authority clears ‘encroachments’

3 min readMumbaiUpdated: May 12, 2026 09:48 PM IST In a second demolition drive backed by heavy police deployment, the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) on Tuesday razed around 100 homes along New Tank Bundar Road in Darukhana, evicting nearly 500 residents, including children. Residents said the operation began around 7 am after police personnel were stationed in the area overnight. Families scrambled to salvage furniture and documents as bulldozers moved in quickly.“We trusted the politicians who promised to stop the demolitions, so we didn’t clear out our homes,” said resident Durai Raj, looking at the remains of his house. “But we were wrong. We barely got an hour to secure our belongings.” MbPA had issued eviction notices on April 17, classifying the settlements as encroachments. An earlier demolition attempt in late April was stalled after strong resistance from residents. This time, amid fears of police action and FIRs, locals did not attempt to resist. While the port authority maintains the settlements are illegal, residents say they possess documents proving they have lived on the land …
