It was set earlier in the year by Kuldeep at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium, bettering Dev’s old record of 5.40m. In Ranchi, the two vaulters were at it again and it was Dev, who first broke the shackles with a clearance of 5.42m to reclaim his national record. Kuldeep improved it to 5.45m just minutes later, before Dev also cleared the distance comfortably to level up. They later went up to 5.50m but failed to cross the barrier. Murali Sreeshankar wins long jump with 8.15m at Indian Athletics Series Opener

Murali Sreeshankar marked a strong return to competition by winning the men’s long jump event at the opening leg of the Indian Athletics Series on Saturday. Representing NCOE Trivandrum, the 27-year-old registered a best jump of 8.15m, which came in his fourth attempt. The effort not only secured him the top spot but also stood as his best performance since returning from knee surgery in 2024. Sreeshankar’s latest mark marginally improved upon his best effort of 8.13m recorded last season, indicating steady progress in his recovery and form. The performance is expected to boost his confidence as he builds towards a crucial competitive calendar. The Indian long jumper had endured a challenging period over the past year. He was forced to miss the Paris 2024 Olympics due to surgery on an injured knee, a setback that interrupted his momentum at a key stage of his career. Although he returned to action later in the year, including an appearance at the World Championships in Tokyo in September, Sreeshankar was unable to advance to the final round. …

Indian Athletics 2024: Neeraj Chopra Shining But Dope Cheats Also Thriving

Gold eluded him and so did the 90m mark but Neeraj Chopra was the undisputed star of Indian athletics for yet another year even as the sport itself continued a long-standing battle with dope cheats while trying to assert itself internationally by bringing big-ticket events to the country. The 26-year-old javelin throw superstar failed to defend his Olympic gold but became the most successful Indian athlete across disciplines in individual sports with his silver medal in the Paris Games. He also finished second in the prestigious Diamond League Finale. Creditably, he achieved both the accolades while carrying an injury. A nagging adductor niggle (a problem related to thigh muscles) troubled him in the run-up to Paris Olympics and a fracture in his left hand hit him ahead of DL Finale. Chopra later said that his injury is fine. He was beaten for the Olympic gold by Pakistani Arshad Nadeem, who surprised the world with a Games record throw of 92.97m. In the DL Finale, Anderson Peters of Grenada, who was struggling after back-to-back …

Why a trimmed-down CWG 2026 could be lose-lose for India: No shooting, uncertainty over wrestling, hockey, cricket | Sport-others News

The good news for India’s athletes — like thousands across the Commonwealth — is that the troubled Games will be held in 2026. The not-so-good news for India’s athletes is it could feature very few sports where the country can contest for medals. The Commonwealth Games Federation and the organisers in Scotland, who rescued the Games by pitching a slimmed-down event, haven’t yet announced the sports that will be a part of the programme. The 2022 edition in Birmingham had 19 sports. The Glasgow organising team has said they will include just 10 sports in the 2026 Games. The CGF is hoping that 13 could be accommodated. Whichever way the decision goes, it could end up being a lose-lose scenario for India given that shooting is likely to remain excluded, wrestling is fighting for a spot while the axe hangs on other sports like hockey and cricket. At the 2022 CWG, India won 61 medals, including 22 of them gold. Wrestling (12), weightlifting (10), athletics (8), boxing and table tennis (7 each) contributed the most …

The speed suits are designed to aid freedom of movement, aerodynamics and faster speed, supporting athletes …

Sreeshankar is an Asian and Commonwealth Games silver medallist. “The surgery was successful under Dr. Bruno Olory at the Aspetar Hospital, Doha. Thank you everyone for all your love and blessings during this tough phase. 18 hours post surgery and I am already walking,” wrote Sreeshankar on Instagram. A screengrab of Murali Sreeshankar’s Instagram post. Sreeshankar had suffered the knee injury during a training session in Palakkad earlier this month. He had qualified for the Paris Olympics, scheduled for July-August, in July 2023 when he won a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Bangkok with a jump of 8.37m, crossing the Olympic qualifying mark by 0.10m. “Life writes strange scripts, and some times there is courage in accepting it and moving on. That’s what I will do. My journey to a comeback began the minute I injured my knee. …
