In a statement issued on Friday, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said that Indian national Nikhil Gupta, charged with the 2023 assassination plot against Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York, has pleaded guilty in a United States court. It further said that Gupta worked at the direction of an Indian government employee to arrange the murder plot. He is set to be sentenced on May 29. “NIKHIL GUPTA, a/k/a “Nick,” an Indian national, pled guilty to all three counts contained in the Second Superseding Indictment, charging him with murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, in connection with his efforts to murder a US citizen in New York City,” the statement said, adding “Gupta pled guilty today before US Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn and is scheduled to be sentenced by US District Judge Victor Marrero on May 29, 2026.” The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit money laundering, in his plea before US Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in ‌Manhattan federal court. …
