Al-Falah University gets show-cause from NAAC over `false accreditation claims`

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has issued a show-cause notice to Al-Falah University, reportedly at present under scrutiny in connection with the Delhi Red Fort blast investigation, for allegedly displaying false accreditation information on its official website, officials said on Thursday, reported the PTI. According to the notice, the NAAC observed that Al-Falah University — “which is neither accredited by nor has applied for accreditation with NAAC” — had publicly claimed on its website that it is “an endeavour of Al-Falah Charitable Trust, which has been running three colleges on the campus, namely Al-Falah School of Engineering and Technology (since 1997, Graded A by NAAC), Brown Hill College of Engineering and Technology (since 2008), and Al-Falah School of Education and Training (since 2006, Graded A by NAAC),” as per the PTI. “This is completely incorrect and misleads the public, particularly parents, students, and other stakeholders,” the NAAC said in the notice. The Council has sought an explanation from the university and directed it to immediately remove the misleading accreditation claims from its website …

The arrests were made in a ratings-for-bribes case. NAAC removes one-fifth of its assessors after bribery incident Even before the bribery incident, NAAC had removed around 800 out of its 6,100 assessors, bringing the number down to 5,364, due to data discrepancies, protocol violations, and based on feedback from their peer assessors and college officials, Sahasrabudhe added. In February, CBI arrested 10 individuals, including seven members of the NAAC peer team and three office-bearers of Guntur-based Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) in the corruption case, which pertains to allegations of bribes being paid to secure an A++ rating for KLEF in Andhra Pradesh during a NAAC inspection. The federal agency has claimed that KLEF officials sought favourable accreditation by bribing NAAC inspection committee members. Later, …

Photo used for representation purpose only | Photo Credit: The Hindu         The scandal involving Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) in Andhra Pradesh, as part of which bribes were offered to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for favourable ranking has prompted significant changes in the grading agency. The NAAC plans to phase out the practice of physical data verification by expert panels, based on the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee’s report submitted last year. In Andhra Pradesh, where the bribery scam surfaced, stakeholders admit to a ‘pervasive culture of offering gifts’ to the inspecting teams of the accrediting body. NAAC team members and the institutions of higher education bypass rules, with the ‘above-normal hospitality’ being offered that includes organising special events, arranging sightseeing and most importantly, offering gifts to the inspection teams for favourable ranking. “It has become a necessary evil and everybody is forced to entertain this for fear of losing out in the rank race,” admits a former office-bearer of Andhra …

Higher education institutions to be assessed under Binary Accreditation system, grading system to go

As per the system, NAAC will categorise HEIs either as “accredited” or “not accredited” instead of giving them grades based on their assessment.  After the NAAC executive council meeting, held on Saturday, it was decided that the new set of reforms will be implemented in two stages. The binary accreditation (accredited or not accredited) system will come into effect for the next four months, and Maturity-Based Graded Accreditation (levels 1 to 5) will be implemented by December. Under Maturity-Based Graded Accreditation, the accredited institutions will be further given levels between one and five to encourage them to achieve the highest level. “There will be Binary Accreditation (either accredited or not accredited) rather than grades to encourage all the institutions to get on-boarded in the accreditation process thereby creating a quality culture in the higher education system,” a senior Ministry of Education (MoE) official said. “The binary accreditation is also in line with the best practices followed in many leading countries in the world,” he added.
