Moon to eclipse Saturn next week; here’s how you can watch | Pune News

On the night of October 14, the Moon will come directly between the Earth and the ringed planet Saturn, Arvind Paranjpye, Director, Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Centre said on Friday. “This occultation of Saturn by the Moon will be visible from India. It can be seen with the naked eye, but a pair of binoculars or a small telescope will be most helpful. If you have a good telescope, the event will be most enjoyable. The event will take place about half an hour after midnight on October 14,” Paranjpye said in a statement issued on Friday. In astronomical terminology, occultation occurs when one astronomical object hides the other. One is advised to observe the Moon and Saturn from about 11.30 pm on October 14. Saturn will be to the East of the Moon. As time progresses, the separation between the two will be seen reducing. Then, at some point, Saturn will start disappearing behind the Moon. After about an hour, Saturn can be seen coming out from behind the Moon. Click here to join Express …

A rare comet brightens the night skies in October | Technology News

Prepare to spot a rare, bright comet. The space rock is slinging toward Earth from the outer reaches of the solar system and will make its closest pass on Saturday. It should be visible through the end of October, clear skies permitting. Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas should be bright enough to see with the naked eye, but binoculars and telescopes will give a better view. “It’ll be this fuzzy circle with a long tail stretching away from it,” said Sally Brummel, planetarium manager at the Bell Museum in Minnesota. What is a comet? Comets are frozen leftovers from the solar system’s formation billions of years ago. They heat up as they swing toward the sun, releasing their characteristic streaming tails.
