Nanded is set to witness a sharp change in weather over the next four days, with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issuing a yellow alert warning of heatwave conditions followed by thunderstorms and gusty winds. After days of searing temperatures of 42 to 43 degrees Celsius, the expected transition to rain and lightning could catch residents off guard, prompting officials to urge heightened caution. The DDMA has issued a yellow alert for Nanded and parts of Marathwada till April 20. Nanded to experience the two extremes After prolonged spells of extreme heat across the region, officials have cautioned that a sudden onset of rain, lightning and strong winds may pose risks to the public. Medical student dies by suicide in Nanded; NCP leader booked for abetment

A student from a private homoeopathic medical college in Nanded in Maharashtra has died by suicide, with police registering a case against a local leader of the Nationalist Congress Party for alleged abetment. The 25-year-old deceased was a second-year student and had been residing in a private hostel in the city for the past two years. Police said she was found dead in her hostel room on Friday. According to a complaint filed by her father, the hostel owner had allegedly been repeatedly pressuring his daughter over pending accommodation fees for the past eight to ten months. He claimed that the hostel operator allegedly frequently demanded payment of the outstanding amount and subjected the student to mental harassment. Unable to cope with the pressure, she allegedly took the extreme step, the complaint stated. Several villages in Maharashtra’s Nanded district felt a mild tremor on Wednesday afternoon, officials said, adding that no damage was reported in the incident. The quake, measuring 3.0 on the Richter Scale, was felt at around 3:25 pm in parts of Nanded`s Mukhed tehsil, including Hibbett, Kolgaon, Dhamangaon, Motarga, Dhanaj and Jamkhed, reported the PTI. The National Centre for Seismology reported that the epicentre was near Khaparal village. The Mukhed Tehsildar confirmed that no loss of life or property has been reported so far. The district administration has issued an advisory urging people to stay calm and remain alert. District Collector Rahul Kardile appealed to citizens not to panic. He advised residents living in houses with tin-sheet roofs to remove stones placed on rooftops for support. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Kavita Mule was elected Mayor of Nanded city in central Maharashtra on Tuesday, winning by a margin of 35 votes in a three-way contest, an official said, reported news agency PTI.  Another BJP corporator, Deepaksingh Rawat, was chosen as Deputy Mayor of the Nanded Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC), where elections were conducted last month alongside 28 other civic bodies across the state. Mule defeated her nearest opponent, Mahejbin Abdul Faheem, a candidate of the Congress-Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) combine, by 35 votes, the official added. The Mayor’s post was reserved for a woman, reported PTI. A special meeting to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor was held at the NWMC headquarters in the presence of the presiding officer and Nanded District Collector Rahul Kardile. The Nanded Police in Maharashtra seized banned gutkha worth Rs 72.93 lakh from vehicles and godowns across the district and nearby Hingoli on Monday as part of a crackdown on illegal tobacco products. During early-morning raids in Hingoli, a police team recovered gutkha valued at Rs 14.67 lakh from three vehicles and booked two persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Food Safety and Standards Act, an official said, reported news agency PTI.  The team also raided a godown in the Itwara area of Nanded city, and found contraband worth Rs 58.26 lakh, and apprehended two more accused, he added. Ahead of the Maharashtra local body elections, a Congress candidate’s husband was seriously injured after being attacked in Maharashtra’s Nanded city, just two days before elections to the local municipal corporation, police said on Wednesday, reported the PTI. The victim, Shivaji Bhalerao, whose wife Sarika Bhalerao is contesting the January 15 civic election on a Congress ticket, was seated outside his home in Ward No. 1 when six assailants arrived on motorcycles and assaulted him, a police official said. Local residents rushed to Bhalerao’s aid, prompting the attackers to flee the scene. He sustained serious injuries in the attack and was immediately taken to hospital. According to a party statement, several aspirants who were denied BJP tickets switched allegiance to rival parties and filed nominations against official BJP candidates. Some members campaigned for rivals The statement added that some of the expelled members were also found actively campaigning for opposing contestants, further undermining party unity, as per the PTI.
