TMC struggles to find candidate for Nandigram bypoll

Two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders have refused to contest the by-election for the Nandigram assembly seat in East Midnapore district which West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari won in April, along with his second seat, Kolkata’s Bhabanipur, where he defeated three-time chief minister Mamata Banerjee. TMC struggles to find candidate for Nandigram bypoll After taking the oath as the Bhabanipur legislator on May 13, Adhikari announced that Nandigram would have a new MLA as per the rules but he would continue to look after its voters as his own. Although the bypoll is yet to be announced, speculations on a possible TMC candidate have started. “Some people approached me but I cannot contest from Nandigram again. The question does not arise,” said Pabitra Kar, who left the Bharatiya Janata Party to unsuccessfully challenge Adhikari last month. Kar joined TMC in the presence of its national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee within hours of leaving the BJP where he was known to be one of Adhikari’s old aides. A similar reply came from TMC’s Sheikh Sufiyan, a veteran …

Heavyweights gear up for round 2 in Bengal elections 2026| India News

West Bengal politics and elections there cannot be discussed without the mention of a rivalry that is possibly one of the biggest political friends-turning-foes stories across states – chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee versus Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is contesting the 2026 assembly polls from the Bhabanipur seat against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. (HT/PTI) What began as a mentor-protégé relationship inside the Trinamool Congress has transformed into one of Indian politics’ most personal and symbolic electoral battles, a contest rooted in rebellion, betrayal and unfinished political business. Mamata vs Suvendu rivalry Once part of the same party and considered close to each other – the TMC – Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari are now rivals with the latter’s dramatic shift to the BJP in 2020. The story of Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari cannot be told without Nandigram, the epicentre of Bengal’s political transformation. Mamata and Suvendu’s Nandigram time In 2007, during the anti-land acquisition movement against the Left Front government, …

Trinamool, BJP vie to pay homage on Nandigram Shaheed Diwas, engage in war of words

The Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (November 10, 2025) competed to pay tributes to Shaheed Diwas to people who were killed in a firing incident in Nandigram in 2007. Violence had erupted in Nandigram in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district in 2007 amidst severe public protests against forcible land acquisition for a petrochemical project being taken up by the erstwhile Left-Front government. On Monday (November 10), the Trinamool and BJP carried out tribute programmes at Nandigram’s Shaheed Bedi — the memorial constructed in memory of those who died on November 10. Leader of Opposition of West Bengal Assembly and BJP MLA from Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari, offered his tributes, while soon after, a delegation of Trinamool Congress comprising Minister Snehasis Chakraborty and local leadership paid homage at the memorial.  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to X to pay her tributes on the occasion of Nandigram Shaheed Diwas, writing ‘Bhulte pari nijer naam, bhulbo nako Nandigram,’ (I may forget my own name, but I will never forget Nandigram). However, Mr. Adhikari while …

Suvendu Adhikari’s Nandigram health camp is a copy of Abhishek’s Sebashray model, says Trinamool

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has launched medical camps in his Nandigram constituency. | Photo Credit: ANI The Trinamool Congress leadership has dubbed health camps set up by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram, as a replication of the Sebashray model launched by party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Mr. Adhikari has set up camps at Sonachura in Nandigram to extend medical facilities to his constituency, a move which was ridiculed by the West Bengal ruling party. In a social media post, the Trinamool Congress said that when Mr. Banerjee launched Sebashray to serve the people of his constituency, Mr. Adhikari mocked it. “Now, when the people of Nandigram want Sebashray, the same Suvendu (Adhikari) is busy replicating what he once ridiculed. Imitation may be flattering, but in politics it simply reveals an intellectual bankruptcy — and the public won’t be fooled,” the Trinamool Congress posted on social media. Several leaders of the Trinamool Congress joined the chorus. “The BJP has made it a habit: mock first, copy later. Every time the Trinamool …

TMC, BJP trade barbs over 2007 Nandigram Killing

The Trinamool Congress and BJP mourned the 2007 killing of 14 persons protesting a planned chemical hub here on Saturday by holding rival functions, exchanging political barbs. Interestingly both programmes, held at a distance of barely 100 meters were held under the banner of Bhumi Uchhed Protirodh Committee (BUPC or Land Disposition Protest Committee), which supported by Mamata Banerjee had put up a stiff resistance to the government`s plans to acquire fertile land near the sea for a proposed chemical hub by MNCs. TMC state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh chose to attack opposition BJP and its Nandigram lawmaker Suvendu Adhikari, an erstwhile TMC leader who defected to the saffron party ahead of the 2021 state election, while paying floral tributes at a memorial there. “CPI-M harmads (goons) who were behind the massacre have now turned saffron. Suvendu Adhikari has done a great disservice to the people of Nandigram by joining hands with those who were behind the armed atrocities on peaceful anti-land grab protesters. He will not be pardoned by the people of …
