Toursists chased, molested, robbed near Nashik’s Bhavali waterfall; 9 detained

Nashik Rural Police have detained nine individuals in connection with the alleged assault, molestation, and robbery of a tourist family at the Bhavali Dam waterfall in Igatpuri taluka of Maharashtra. A case has been registered under multiple serious provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including dacoity, attempt to murder, outraging the modesty of a woman, damage to property, unlawful assembly, and other relevant sections. The incident occurred on the evening of July 12 when a family from Nashik was visiting the scenic Bhavali Waterfall. According to the complaint, the family confronted a group of men allegedly harassing a woman member. The accused then chased the family’s vehicle for nearly 10-15 kilometres along the Mumbai-Agra National Highway, vandalising it with sticks and iron rods. Police said the attackers molested the women in the vehicle, assaulted other family members, and robbed them before fleeing. Four people– three minor cousins and a young woman, lost their lives in a tragic drowning incident at the Gangapur Dam area in Maharashtra’s Nashik district. The accident has cast a pall of gloom over Savargaon village and nearby areas., According to information provided by the Disaster Management Department, the deceased have been identified as Ganesh Gotarne (16), Sahil Gotarne (16), and Nikhil Gotarne (16), all residents of Savargaon in Nashik district, along with Mayuri Jadhav (21), a resident of Talegaon Anjaneri. Reports suggest that the Gotarne family had hosted relatives on Thursday for the traditional ‘Dhondya-che Jevan’, a customary community feast. Following lunch, Mayuri Jadhav expressed a desire to visit the spillway area of Gangapur Dam. She later headed to the dam with five other family members and relatives. The statue was unveiled by ISKCON’s Gaurang Das Prabhu and renowned economist Dr. Vinayak Govilkar in Ramsrushti Garden in Tapovan in the city’s Panchavati area. Lord Ram is believed to have spent a considerable part of his 14-year exile in Tapovan. In the wake of the collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Malvan in Sindhudurg on August 26, officials here said special care has been taken for the safety and stability of this statue. “The statue, made of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP), has been erected on a RCC structure. The slab is 15-foot high. A 108-foot high flag post has also been erected,” an official said. The statue will be inspirational for devotees, Mr. Prabhu said.
