‘One nation, one election’ mechanism may be ready for rollout by 2029: Joint panel chief

The Joint Committee of Parliament examining the Bills on simultaneous elections is working to create a mechanism that could make the ‘One Nation, One Election’ reform fully operational by the 2029 general election, its chairperson said on Friday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the panel’s two-day meeting in Goa, P.P. Chaudhary claimed that nearly 99 % of civil society stakeholders consulted so far have backed the proposal, which aims to curb an estimated ₹7 lakh crore economic loss caused by frequent elections. The committee began its deliberations in Goa on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, with an interaction with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and members of his Cabinet, seeking their views on the challenges involved in implementing simultaneous elections and ways to address them. Highlighting the economic rationale behind the proposal, Mr. Chaudhary cited findings placed before the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind. He said that an economic study submitted to the Kovind committee estimated that holding elections separately across the country results in an economic loss of …

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Jul 6, 2026 10:00 PM IST Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) President BN Tiwari has questioned actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s choice of films, alleging that the actor frequently associates himself with projects that attract controversy. His remarks come in the wake of Satluj being removed from ZEE5 within 48 hours of its release. Speaking to IANS, Tiwari said, “I am very surprised why Diljit Dosanjh chooses to do controversial films. He should understand the impact of such decisions. He is a superstar of Punjab, and he should think carefully so that his image is not affected. He has a huge fan base across the world today.” He further said that actors should not choose projects solely for financial reasons and must also consider their responsibility towards the nation. “From what I understand, it is also an artistE’s duty not to do films just for money or any other reason. One must keep ‘nation first’ in mind. I am not saying that he does not have any responsibility towards the nation—he …

The night Cape Verde, the smallest nation in the World Cup nearly broke Messi’s Argentina

The night Cape Verde, the smallest nation in the World Cup nearly broke Messi’s Argentina

In the beatifically lit-up Hard Rock Stadium in Miami a beautiful fairy-tale met a tearful end. Cape Verde’s stirring journey, from utter unknown to holding off the game’s powerhouses to nearly pulling off the greatest shocks of all time, ended at the hands, legs, and the experience of the world champions, Argentina in extra-time (3-2). The unwritten story would haunt their brave men, those that defeated odds to be just here, those left every drop of sweat, tears, and energy on the field, but Cape Verde leave the World Cup as the tournament’s most heart-warming narrative, one that would not be forgotten, or be construed as an accident of fortune or fixture. They leave as heroes, and some as household names. The emotional toll the match took on its subjects was such that Messi knelt and prayed, staring into the skies. His teammates had long sprawled on the grass blades; Cape Verde players staggered like ghosts. Their supporters looked hollow. The world regurgitated the moments of an unseemly World Cup classic, wishing it never ended. …

Cape Verde reach World Cup knockouts as smallest nation in tournament history

5 min readBostonUpdated: Jun 27, 2026 09:34 PM IST When Cape Verde locked out Saudi Arabia, home to one of the richest leagues in the world and conquerors of Argentina at the previous World Cup, the tiny island nation battered by hurricanes were not yet certain of their progress to the knockouts. Their fate depended on the Uruguay-Spain game. After shaking hands with the Saudi players, they wandered around, searching for their messenger of hope. Finally, the news arrived: Spain had beaten Uruguay. The smallest nation ever to reach the knockouts of a World Cup were through. Midfielder Deroy Duarte told reporters he wanted to cry. “Everyone was just waiting and praying,” he said. “We deserved it so much, because we gave everything. There was so much tension. The joy that came out is something I never felt before, and I hope to feel it again.” Soon he joined his teammates in a full-on party. Manager Pedro Leitão Brito, known as Bubista, strolled in furiously waving a giant Cape Verde flag. Some of his players …

Cape Verde creates WC history as smallest nation to reach knockouts, set to face Argentina

2 min readUpdated: Jun 27, 2026 07:41 AM IST The final whistles went off in Guadalajara and Houston within moments of each other on Friday night. When Uruguay suffered a 0-1 defeat to Spain, the expanded field of a 48-team World Cup rejoiced as Cape Verde’s stunning resistance pulled off a historic result over Saudi Arabia at the Houston Stadium. A goalless draw meant that they had denied any of their Group H opponents the satisfaction of a win and consigned Uruguay’s group-stage exit. An archipelago of 10 volcanic islands not far from the Western African coast, Cape Verde finished second in Group H, securing a berth in the World Cup knockouts at their first attempt. The 56-year-old Bubista’s side became the smallest nation, by size and population, to qualify for the World Cup knockout stages, pushing down Uruguay to third place, in less than eight months since they secured their berth at the sport’s grandest stage. They began their campaign with a stunning hold of former champions Spain in a 0-0 draw, affirming that …
