New Delhi, An expert panel of the environment ministry has recommended the grant of environment clearance to a 235-km greenfield expressway connecting Varanasi and Kolkata, which requires the diversion of more than 103 hectares of reserved and protected forest land in West Bengal. The details of the project were discussed at the 444th meeting of the expert panel, known as the expert appraisal committee , which took place between April 23 and April 24. The project will run through the districts of Purulia, Bankura, Pashchim Mednipur, Hoogli and Howrah, and will require cutting of 40,000 trees in non-forest areas and 10,000 in forest areas, according to the minutes of the meeting. The NHAI stated that the initiative was aimed at promoting gender inclusivity and social empowerment, as well as improving service delivery at the toll plazas on National Highways. The barrier is part of the 92.3-km Mysuru–Kushalnagar access-controlled highway project, aimed at ensuring that vehicular noise and movement do not disturb avian species in one of Karnataka’s most important bird habitats. NHAI officials said that the proposal has already received clearance from the Standing Committee of the State Wildlife Board, and the State government has now forwarded the required documents to the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for final approval. Stating that “citizenry cannot be deprived of a well-constructed highway to ensure smooth and free movement,” the Delhi High Court has permitted the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to proceed with its intent to terminate the contract of a Pune contractor working on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The Indian Express, on December 19, 2025, had reported on how the 1,386-km Expressway project, being built at a cost of Rs 1.04 lakh crore, has been left in limbo owing to non-completion of an 87-km stretch in Gujarat by the contractor, Roadways Solutions India Infra Limited (RSIIL). RSIIL was first awarded all these three stretches in 2021. Two of these were scrapped in March 2023 due to delays, only to be re-awarded to the same company in November 2023 after it bid the lowest. At the end of almost four years now, less than 20% per cent of the 87 km has been completed. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite permission for laying an underground master pipeline under Dwarka expressway, which would ensure water supply in Sector 58 to Sector 80, which at present faces extensive water shortage during summers, said officials on Thursday. The Punjab and Haryana high court has summoned deputy commissioners of three districts, after it was apprised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that three land parcels, acquired for various infrastructure projects including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, were taken back by the respective owners in the last one week. In April, the high court had summoned deputy commissioners (DCs) and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) of all districts in wake of the rising instances of possession being taken back by landowners in different parts of the state.
