Behind Sawan Barwal’s marathon national record

Behind Sawan Barwal’s marathon national record

Sawan Barwal almost didn’t make it to Rotterdam. A knee injury forced him out of the London Marathon last October, just ten days before the race. He took a month off, rebuilt his schedule from scratch, and spent much of December recovering before resuming training in January. By the time he lined up at the NN Marathon Rotterdam on Sunday, he had already overcome more than most first-time marathoners face. What followed was history! Barwal clocked 2:11:58s to break Shivnath Singh’s national record – a mark that had stood since 1978, making it the oldest in Indian athletics. He finished 20th in the elite field. The record fell by less than a second. But Barwal is quick to put that in context. “My target was around 2 hours eight or nine minutes,” he told The Bridge. “The preparation, the workouts everything was pointing there. Up to around the 38-40 kilometres mark, we were on. But in the last two kilometres, it got windy. Everything changed,” he rued. The national record, then, arrived not as the …

Gulveer Singh dips below one-hour mark, but it’s not national record

Gulveer Singh dips below one-hour mark, but it’s not national record

2 min readMar 15, 2026 09:54 PM IST Star Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh created history by becoming the first-ever Indian athlete to dip below the one-hour mark in half marathon on Sunday. Running at the prestigious New York City Half Marathon, Gulveer finished third with a timing of 59 minutes 42 seconds against a strong international field. The Indian finished behind South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt, who clinched the top spot with a time of 59:30, while Morocco-born American long-distance runner Zouhair Talbi finished second in 59:41. Gulveer’s timing is better than the current national record of half marathon set by Avinash Sable. However, it won’t be considered as the official national record because the course of NYC half marathon is not certified for world and national records. While the race is certified by both USA Track and Field and World Athletics, the course of the race is not considered for records due to two reasons: point-to-point course and elevation drop. The start and finish of the course are far apart resulting in tailwinds and …

Shooting: Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar betters 50m rifle 3p national record

India’s Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar bettered the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions world record final score at the 2025 National Shooting Championships in Bhopal on Monday. Tomar, a two-time Olympian, shot a brilliant 470.5 to win the gold medal. The score is an impressive 1.7 better than the world record held by China’s Liu Yukun, which stands at 468.9. Tomar’s score, however, won’t stand as the official world record since it wasn’t registered in an ISSF-accredited competition. The 24-year-old from Madhya Pradesh though now has the bragging rights for the national record. As Tomar ran away with the gold medal, Niraj Kumar (463.7) finished a distant second. Akhil Sheoran completed the podium. Earlier, Tomar had shot an impressive 590 to qualify for the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions final. It was also a national record equaling performance. Neeraj Chopra’s decade-long journey to the historic 90m mark

Indian athletes delivered an exceptional performance, shattering two national records at the Doha Diamond League in Qatar on Friday. Neeraj Chopra, India’s premier athlete, once again led the nation’s charge by not only breaking the national record but also breaching the long-elusive 90m mark in the men’s javelin throw. With this feat, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to reach this milestone and only the third Asian ever to do so, after Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan and Chao-Tsun Cheng of Chinese Taipei. However, reaching the 90m mark was no simple feat. Neeraj waited almost a decade for this moment but never lost faith in himself, despite public doubts. Here, The Bridge sheds light on his journey to becoming a 90m thrower: 2016 – 86.48m – Junior World Champion Neeraj Chopra came into the limelight in 2016 when he became the first Indian to win a U20 World Championship with a world junior record of 86.48m. Driven up a pole at airports and trains, Dev Meena vaults into the record books

Kochi: Dev Meena had just soared over 5.35m to break his own pole vault national record at the 2025 Federation Cup. Just as he was soaked in the occasion and was looking up congratulatory posts on social media, his coach – Ghanshyam Yadav’s phone rang. On the line was none other than former Sports Minister of Dev’s home state, Yashodhara Raje Scindia. Her tone was a mix of congratulatory and concern. “I told him [Dev] not to use his phone on competition day,” she said sharply over the speakerphone. The coach, sheepishly standing beside a confused Dev, could only mutter, “Ji Maharaj ji,” as both listened in silence. Despite the unexpected scolding, the moment reflected the deep involvement Scindia – a key figure behind the MP Athletics Academy – continues to have in the careers of young athletes like Dev. “Wherever I am is because of the support that we have got from the Madhya Pradesh Sports department,” Dev admitted later. Rain spoils the party On Tuesday, Dev could’ve easily gone higher. He had crossed …
