Protest over census escalates in Manipur amid call to boycott govt institutions

Normal life remained paralysed across several valley districts in Manipur on Wednesday as the 48-hour shutdown called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD), a Meitei group, against the Census until a National Register of Citizens (NRC) is done, entered its last day. The organisation announced a boycott of all government institutions starting Thursday as part of its agitation. Market places, educational institutions, and public transport were also affected. A confrontation was triggered after the protestors were blocked. (ANI) Hundreds took to the streets under the banner of Just Fair Delimitation (JFD), a civil body, and marched towards the Manipur assembly, which is in session, with placards. A confrontation was triggered after the Manipur Police and Rapid Action Forces blocked the protestors and fired tear gas shells. The six protestors sustained minor injuries and were given first aid and discharged. Congress lawmaker K Meghachandra raised the matter in the assembly and urged the government to defer the census process until peace is restored and internally displaced persons (IDPs) are resettled. While it is unusual for Chief Ministers to descend on the streets and protest in other parts of the country, it is not an uncommon sight in West Bengal, particularly when elections are round the corner. On November 4, the street protest by Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson, was against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. With a similar exercise being carried out in the neighbouring State of Bihar a few months earlier, the TMC leadership had warned of massive protests, including laying siege to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, if the exercise was carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the State. At the end of her march, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre and the ECI of using the SIR as a political tool to intimidate voters. …
