Tokyo Olympics finalist Saurabh Chaudhary marked his return to the national team after topping the average scores in selection trials 1 and 2 at the Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi on Friday, ending a long absence from the squad that saw him miss out on the Paris Olympics. Chaudhary scored an average of 584.85, the best among all shooters, including Paris Olympics 10m Air Pistol mixed event bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh, who is currently eighth in the national rankings with an average of 580.625. Chaudhary will now be part of the Indian shooting squad heading to the World Cups in Peru and Argentina in April. His last appearance in the Indian team was in 2023 at the Asian Championships, where he finished a lowly 35th, after a poor qualifying session that saw him put up only 569 on the board. Manu Bhaker made an impressive return to competitive shooting at the national selection trials for the upcoming international events, on Monday. She has been out of action since the 2024 Paris Olympics. Bhaker recorded a qualification score of 587 in the 25m pistol event, the highest in the field, before finishing third in the finals. The 25m Pistol Women’s (T1) category trial finished with Simranpreet Kaur Brar from Punjab emerging as the winner. She secured first place with a total score of 36, edging out Esha Singh from Telangana, who finished second with 35 hits. Shahu Tushar Mane clinched the gold medal in the men’s 10m Air Rifle competition, edging out his opponents for his first senior national title, at the MP State Academy Shooting Range, in Bhopal on Monday. The competition saw Mane deliver a near-perfect performance in the edge-of-the-seat 24-shot final, winning by the smallest of margins. The 22-year-old from Kolhapur, representing Indian Railways, shot an impressive series, with all his shots staying above 10.1. Despite a late surge from Dhanush Srikanth, who finished just 0.1 points behind with 252.2, Mane held his ground. Srikanth’s chances were hampered by a 9.8 in his fifth shot, which proved costly. The two finalists fired identical scores of 10.6 and 10.5 in the final rounds, and Mane confirmed his gold medal with that. Rajasthan’s Yash Vardhan took the bronze, finishing ahead of Rudrankksh Patil. Haryana teenager Suruchi was the star with a triple gold performance at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range here in the national capital, on women’s air pistol day of the on-going 67th National Shooting Championship Competitions (NSCC). The daughter of an army veteran from Jhajjar, who began Shooting five years ago in the same range as double Olympic bronze medallist Manu Bhaker, won her first ever senior national title, with a score of 243.1 in the women’s 10m air pistol final, before going on to add the junior and youth crowns for a memorable nationals outing. In the process, she bettered the silver effort in women’s air pistol, achieved in the previous nationals. Suruchi went into the eight-woman final as the in-form Shooter, topping the qualifications with a solid 585. Rifle shooter Kiran Ankush Jadhav overcame the challenge from two Olympians including the Paris Olympic bronze medalist Swapnil Anil Kusale to win the men’s 50m three positions (3P) title at the M.P. State Shooting Academy range on Wednesday. Representing the Navy at the National Shooting Championships, Kiran defeated Olympic medalist Kusale (Railways) and local boy Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar in the final. The navy man shot 465.8 in the final to leave double-Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar of the home state in second place on a score of 463.1. Swapnil, after leading the 45-shot final till the 40th shot, bowed out in third ahead of the final gold-deciding shot, with a tally of 451.8. Earlier, the railwayman had topped the qualification with a world-class score of 593, leaving Aishwary a point behind in second in that match. Kiran had qualified fourth with a solid 590.
