Ernakulam native arrested in case relating to BJP leader’s death

An Ernakulam native was arrested by Thalassery police in connection with the death of M. Ratheesh, former president of the BJP Eranholi panchayat committee, who was found dead at his office on August 3. Morappilly Vaishakh, 40, a native of Mattur in Ernakulam, was arrested on charges of abetment of suicide. Police said the investigation followed a note allegedly written by Ratheesh in which Vaishakh’s name was mentioned. According to the police, Ratheesh and Vaishakh had allegedly collected ₹24 lakh from Unnikrishnan, a Kannur native, about three years ago after promising his son a railway job. Of this, ₹15 lakh was allegedly transferred to Vaishakh’s bank account. When the promised job did not materialise, Unnikrishnan repeatedly demanded that the money be returned, but Vaishakh allegedly failed to repay it. Unnikrishnan had reportedly demanded that Vaishakh return ₹10 lakh by August 2. Police suspect that the financial dispute and the alleged failure to repay the money caused Ratheesh severe distress and led to him end his life. Ratheesh was found dead at his office near the …

‘Fish ladders’ planned at Yamuna to revive native species

The Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) has asked Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to develop “fish ladders” at the Wazirabad, Okhla and Hathnikund barrages to facilitate the migration of native fish species, during a meeting on Tuesday, a senior official said on Wednesday. According to a Central government survey conducted between 2020 and 2024, a total of 126 fish species were recorded along the Yamuna from Yamunotri to Prayagraj. (RAJ K RAJ /HT PHOTO) A fish ladder is a stepped water structure that helps fish bypass obstacles such as dams and barrages during their upstream migration. “All basin states have been asked to develop fish ladders on barrages under their control. This is likely to help movement of fishes especially during the monsoon when the river is less polluted,” said the official, who did not wish to be named. Three different states oversee all three barrages located in Delhi. “Delhi only manages the Wazirabad barrage, ITO comes under Haryana and Okhla is managed by the Uttar Pradesh government,” the official said. According to a Central …

Four cheetahs from South Africa arrived in Bengaluru early Saturday, marking a fresh push for wildlife conservation in Karnataka. The animals landed at Kempegowda International Airport shortly after midnight and were received by Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre. Officials said the transfer was carried out under strict supervision, with veterinary teams ensuring the animals’ safety during transit. The cheetahs have been moved to Bannerghatta Biological Park, where they will undergo a mandatory 30-day quarantine. During this period, experts will monitor their health, diet, and adaptation to local climatic conditions. Authorities have prioritised preventing infections and minimising stress as the animals acclimatise to their new environment. ‘Some people are more native, but it’s a question of citizenship’: Hiren Gohain

At 87, writer and activist Hiren Gohain, one of Assam’s foremost public intellectuals, shows no sign of slowing down. The Assam Nagorik Sanmilani, a citizens’ collective led by him and retired IPS officer Harekrishna Deka, was at the forefront of calls for Opposition unity and seeking judicial intervention over a “sustained pattern of hate speeches” by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He discusses issues foregrounding the Assam election campaign with The Hindu. Edited excerpts: You were an adviser to the regional party Raijor Dal during its early days before dissociating yourself. Why then did you issue appeals for the Opposition to come together this Assembly election? I used to be adviser but Akhil Gogoi [Raijor Dal chief] refused to have any truck with the Congress, which allied with the AIUDF and other parties in the previous election. Since I was supporting the alliance, I felt it unethical to remain with Akhil Gogoi and resigned. Things have changed a lot since then. This time, I had this notion of an Opposition unity quite early. We had …

A report by WABetaInfo hints that watches like Enduro 3, Fenix E, Quatix 8, and Tactix 8 are also supported, but we suggest you to take this information with a grain of salt. To use WhatsApp on your Garmin watch, the company says users should update their app to the latest version and enable Bluetooth permissions for WhatsApp on their iPhone.
