Bastar close to being considered Naxal-free, possibility of revival extremely remote: IGP

Sundarraj on Monday said Bastar today stands “very close to being considered Naxal-free” and the likelihood of a large-scale revival of the Maoist movement appears “extremely remote”. The statement came on the eve of the Centre’s deadline to eliminate Maoism in the country. Mr. Sundarraj said Bastar has historically been considered the strategic nucleus of the Maoist movement. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma recently said “96% of Bastar is free from Maoism and only 30 to 40 active cadres remain”. There has been an escalation in anti-Naxal operations in Bastar since January 2024, resulting in 500 Maoist cadres being killed as of March 29 this year. They included top cadres such as the secretary general of the CPI (Maoist), Basavaraju, who was killed in May last year. “Of the 24 individuals who constituted the central committee and the politburo in 2024, only one politburo member remains active. Odisha`s Nabrangpur district has been declared “Naxal-free” after nine Maoists surrendered in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, police said Saturday. Seven women were among these surrendered Naxalites. They were carrying a total bounty of Rs 47 lakh. The surrendered Naxalites were operating in Nabarangpur and Chhattisgarh`s Dhamtari district, an official said.“With their surrender, Nabarangpur district has become free from Naxal activity,” police said in a statement. The district has witnessed several incidents of Naxal violence, including the assassination of BJD MLA Jagabandhu Majhi and his personal security officer, PK Patro, on Sept 24, 2011. The Maoists had also attacked the Kundei police station in Raigarh block on July 16, 2010. “However, there has been no major trouble in the district after 2011,” a police officer said. Gadchiroli will be Naxal-free in three years: CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday asserted that the state`s Gadchiroli district will be Naxal-free in the next three years and Gadchiroli town will be the `steel city` of India, reported the PTI. Replying to the debate on the opposition-sponsored last week motion in the legislative assembly in Nagpur, Devendra Fadnavis listed several infrastructure projects across the state and farmer-centric initiatives. He said the northern part of the Gadchiroli district, bordering Telangana and Chhattisgarh, has been rid of Naxals and is on the path of development. Naxals have either been killed or surrendered, he said. About 1,500 youth from the district, which is in the state`s Vidarbha region, have joined the police force of which 150 are from families of Naxals, the CM said, according to the PTI. “There has been no recruitment by Naxals from Maharashtra. In the next three years, Naxalism will be completely eradicated from Gadchiroli,” he said.
