Ahmedabad Customs seize suspected ganja parcel from Thailand disguised as wooden blocks

Customs officers at the Foreign Post Office (FPO) in Ahmedabad have seized a parcel originating from Thailand after discovering 467.5 grams of suspected ganja concealed inside and declared as “wooden blocks”, officials said on Tuesday. The seizure was made during the routine examination of imported parcels at the FPO. According to Customs, officers intercepted a suspicious carton arriving from Thailand that had been declared as “wooden blocks”. On opening the package, they found two polythene packets containing a substance suspected to be ganja (cannabis). Latur police on Friday destroyed seized narcotics worth Rs 1.18 crore, a police official said. The contraband, comprising 713 kilograms of ganja, 21 kilograms of opium and 96 grams of mephedrone, was seized in 45 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he added. The officials said, “The destruction process was carried out in the presence of Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe and Additional Superintendent of Police Mangesh Chavan under Section 52(A) of the NDPS Act through an authorised panchnama process. As per the official statement from the police, “Officials from Rainawari Police Station, acting under the provisions of Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, attached a single-storey residential house along with land measuring 11 marlas belonging to accused Bilal Ahmad Patoo, Saidakadal, Srinagar. A bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry passed the order while hearing an application filed by the convict seeking suspension of sentence under Section 389 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) which pertains to suspension of a sentence pending appeal and the release of the appellant on bail. Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry ordered the convict to be released on bail. “The applicant-appellant is directed to plant 20 saplings during ensuing monsoon season and maintain thereof for one year and produce the proof of plantation of the saplings,” the high court’s order dated February 23 read. Justice Y Lakshmana Rao was hearing a plea against the trial court order under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act extending the period of remand of the accused up to 250 days. In its December 4 order, the high court dismissed Majithia’s bail plea, observing that the possibility of him influencing the investigation could not be ruled out.
