Meghalaya Coal Explosion: NDRF rescue operations underway, 18 killed in blast

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team on Friday arrived at the blast site in Thangskai area of Meghalaya`s East Jaintia Hills to carry out rescue and recovery operations after an explosion in an illegal rat-hole coal mine that claimed eighteen lives. A day earlier, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma assured that action would be taken against individuals responsible for the incident. He announced that the Meghalaya government will provide an ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. He said that any illegal activities will not be tolerated, as the government has promoted scientific mining. Amid protests, NDRF begins assessment of poisonous gas leak in Dhanbad The team visited Rajput Basti in Putki Balihari colliery area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited , which falls within Kenduadih police station limits and is located around 15 km from the district headquarters. However, NDRF personnel refused to share any information with waiting journalists. Kenduadih police station officer-in-charge Prabodh Pandey said, “The team is assessing the level of gas leakage, the type of gas being emitted, and how to mitigate it.” Officials said the team is examining gas leakage near the abandoned GM Bangla in the PB Area of Rajput Basti. Emissions have been reported from three locations — Rajput Basti, Muslim Muhalla, and near the Kenduadih police station building. Cyclone Ditwah: India deploys 80 NDRF personnel in cyclone-hit Sri Lanka

India on Saturday sent a contingent of 80 NDRF rescuers and specialised search dogs to Sri Lanka for undertaking relief and rescue operations in the aftermath of unprecedented floods in the neighbouring country following Cyclone Ditwah, an official spokesperson said. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been divided into two teams. The teams, along with four rescue dogs, took off onboard an IL-76 IAF aircraft from the Hindon airbase near Delhi for Colombo around 4 am on Saturday, the spokesperson said. He said the teams are carrying inflatable boats, hydraulic cutting and breaching tools, communication equipment, first-aid kits and other essential rescue stores to support search, rescue, and relief operations in cyclone-affected regions of Sri Lanka. The deployment is part of Operation Sagar Bandhu launched by India to help its southern neighbour. A transgender person and his friend who allegedly jumped into Mahim creek Tuesday afternoon were not found after a search operation by the police and fire brigade till late evening. According to police, the transgender person, identified as Irshad Asif Shaikh (22), and Kalandar Altaf Khan (20)— both residents of Nargis Dutt Nagar in Bandra (west) — were engaged in an argument on the creek bridge located between Mahim and Bandra. During the argument, Irshad allegedly jumped into the water, and Khan took the plunge to rescue him. Bystanders noticed the incident and informed the police. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the state-of-the-art State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) which aims to use new technology effectively for disaster management. “Due to climate change, the nature, intensity and frequency of disasters are changing. Therefore, it is necessary to emphasise on ‘mitigation’ and immediate response after incidents. It is important to have a strong ‘command and communication system’ for disaster management, and this center will be useful for taking decisions quickly and providing quick response,” said Fadnavis. The new SEOC includes bezel-free video wall, high capacity audio visual conferencing, data servers, high-speed computers, satellite phone, ham radios, LED video walls  and wireless sets, which can be used for timely response and coordination among all the systems during a disaster.
