From junior world record in 2016 to 90m+ in 2025 at Doha Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra finally breached the elusive 90m frontier with a 90.23m throw but was just pipped at the post by Germany’s Julian Weber in a dramatic men’s javelin contest at the Doha leg of Diamond League on Friday. The 27-year-old double Olympic medallist Indian sent his spear to 90.23m in his third attempt to join a list of javelin throwers, led by his current coach Jan Zelezny of Czechia, who had recorded 90m-plus efforts. He became the third Asian and 25th overall to achieve the feat. But Weber’s sensational last throw of 91.06m. Still, it was a night that Neeraj can remember for a long time as a dream was finally achieved. As Neeraj goes past the 90m for the first time, here’s a look at the throws that have defined his glittering career so far. 86.48m: World U20 Championships, Bydgoszcz (POL)23 JUL 2016 In an interview before Paris 2024, Neeraj had said that the only throw that he had been satisfied till date was the 86.48m in the World Under-20 Championships 2016. “That was …

“This is just the beginning, can throw much further”

Moments after he breached the 90m mark, world champion Neeraj Chopra said ‘this is just the beginning’ and his coach Jan Zelezny felt he could have thrown ‘2-3 metres more’ on Friday night. Chopra finished second in the Doha leg of the Diamond League, throwing a distance of 90.23m. He became only the 25th athlete to throw 90m or more and set a national record in the process. However, the two-time Olympic and world champion was pipped to the post by Germany’s Julian Weber, who threw 91.06m to finish first. Like Neeraj, it was Weber’s first 90m-plus throw as well. Story continues below this ad Speaking after his event, Neeraj said it was a ‘bittersweet’ feeling to throw more than 90m and finish second. “But you know, it (has) happened with me (before) also. When I broke the national record in Turku (in 2022) with over 89 meters and also in Stockholm (when) I threw 89.94 (also 2022). I was always second. And also here, I broke the national record and came second,” Neeraj said. …

An event named after him featuring world’s top javelin throwers, giving back to Indian athletics

Even after all these years of competing and winning, like any good athlete, Neeraj Chopra continues to learn. He has a new coach in his corner – world record holder Jan Zelezny – and is getting ready for another season of grind. But that is not all, he is learning things about his event that he had never given a second thought about before. Like lighting levels required at a venue for broadcasting, that is measured in lux – the unit of illuminance. As it turned out that was the reason the event had to be moved from close to his home in Panchkula, Haryana to the Sree Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium, Bengaluru. “The World Athletics requirements for international broadcast needed 600 lux and we needed more. There was not enough time to arrange everything. So, for this year, we are shifting this event to Bengaluru,” Neeraj said on Monday. “Things like that the brightness should be at a certain lux value, I didn’t even know this till now. We just knew that we have to …

They are unable to play at that level. “They think that only doping can get them performance, but that is not the truth. It is their hard work and self-belief, proper guidance from the coach will take you forward. “Eat well, rest well and work hard. Do everything properly. “To tell you the truth, once they dope, the dope test happens, and they get caught. They receive a ban of 2-4 years. There is no life in that. “So if you want to play at a good level, the mindset of our athletes needs to be changed.” Neeraj has also requested the coaches to keep their athletes away from doping. “I request the coaches …
