The government has reduced the qualifying eligibility percentile for postgraduate medical counselling in 2025 to prevent PG seats from remaining vacant, minister of state for health Anupriya Patel told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. (Sansad TV) In a written reply, Patel said: “Consistent with past academic years which had proven effective in ensuring maximum seat utilisation, the government reduced the qualifying percentile for eligibility to PG Counselling 2025 to ensure precious PG medical seats do not remain vacant.” The move follows the completion of two rounds of counselling. The reply further read: “The decision to revise the qualifying percentiles follows the completion of Round-2 counselling by MCC wherein it was reported that of the 29,476 seats offered by MCC for counselling, 9,621 seats remained vacant. NEET PG 2025 Round Two: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released the seat matrix for NEET PG round 2 counselling, announcing that approximately 32,000 seats are available under clear and virtual vacancies. In a major update, the committee has added 2,620 new seats to the matrix for this round. Candidates have been informed that the choice filling link for round 2 is live on the official website, mcc.nic.in. MCC has opened the application portal for NEET PG round 2 counselling from December 5 to December 9. Candidates who were not allotted seats in the first round or who wish to apply afresh for the All India Quota (AIQ) seats must submit their applications online within this window. NEET PG Admission: In a landmark ruling on January 29, the Supreme Court of India declared domicile-based reservations for postgraduate (PG) medical courses unconstitutional, stating that such practices violate Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to equality. A three-judge bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy, Sudhanshu Dhulia, and SVN Bhatti asserted that state quota seats must be filled solely based on merit as determined by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The court emphasised that residence-based reservations in PG medical admissions are impermissible, highlighting that “we are all domiciles in the territory of India. There is nothing like a provincial or state domicile. Candidates with grievances wrote to the Committee through which the competent authority decided to allow candidates till December 26 up to 6 pm to resign from round one and two seats. The Committee also shared certain guidelines for the candidates while resigning the allotted seats.
